year of the sheep / 未年おめでとうございます

January 1, 2015

1979Faroe Islands001

19 March 1979, Faröe Islands
engraver: Czesław Słania / printed in Helsinki

Are you having a relaxed holiday?  I wish you have a fresh and prosperous new year in 2015.  In the Eastern calender, 2015 is the year of the Sheep.  In some country the sheep year starts from the lunar new year, but in Japan it starts today.

This stamp is a treasure – one of the great masterpieces by a master craftsman.  Please do enjoy the magnified view below, different textures of fleece and transparency of the eyes.

December 31, 2014

10 October 1987, Sweden
Bicentenary of Circus in Sweden
designer: Eva Jern / engraver: Czesław Słania

The final stamp of the year of the Horse is the work of a master craftsman – a rather unusually colourful Slania.

A brave design – the country name is written around the low circuit handrail, and well, missing the last E – but that seems nothing for them in comparison to a cool design.  It is obvious that Slania is more interested in depicting the horse than the girl on top of it, and also took time on the facial expressions of the audience in the dark.

This is the 28th stamp of horses since this January and I have 70 more…  Let’s wait for 12 years to feature them all!

January 23, 2014

28 September 1971, Sweden
engraver: Czesław Słania

Speed was one of the reasons why horses had been used for transportation, obviously.  So, they were the main motive power for the postal services, too.

This great piece of work by the engraver Czesław Słania shows, the express-speed of a three horsepower wagon with postal horn mark on.  You may hear the creak noise together with the clatter of hoofs.

December 22, 2013

4 May 1970, Denmark
25th Anniversary of Liberation
designer: P. Christensen
engraver: C. Slania

Today is the winter solstice day.  I have been looking for information on ‘Candle Night‘ – a series of campaigns for saving energy by switching off all electric lights between 8-10pm on the summer and winter solstice day.  It seems the campaign was finished in 2012 and is not happening today.  Why??  It’s very nice to spend time with candle light!

This Slania engraved stamp is imitating a wood carved print – primitive and toasty.

November 11, 2012

10 November 1971, Sweden
Nils Hogersson on Goose
from “The Wonderful Adventures of Nils” by Selma Lagerlöf
designer: P. Pettersson
engraver:  Czesław Słania

Yesterday afternoon I saw a group of birds in the sky, in formation flight heading South.  Too far away to identify, but I guess they are migrating Geese.  That V shape reminded me of this stamp, engraved by  Czesław Słania.  Let’s enlarge a beautiful detail…

“The Wonderful Adventures of Nils” was an animated film on TV when I was a child in Japan and it is evocative for me.  Because of that TV series, I still imagine a little boy on one of the Geese when I see the V-shaped formation of migrating birds.

December 17, 2011

16 February 1999, UK
‘Profile on Print’ booklet
engraver: Czesław Słania
based on original design by Arnold Machin

This intaglio engraved by the master Czesław Słania was issued to celebrate The 2000 Stamp Show.  After 48 years of his career, Słania’s polished technique to make three dimensional expression by controlled lines are fully exhibited in much larger format, over double the size of the definitive.

But, somehow this does not look like the Machin original – it does not represent the youth of the Queen, I guess.  Perhaps Słania’s precision urged him to reflect the Time and Tide since the relief was made.

want to ride!

December 28, 2010

24 March 1977 Sweden
Keep Fit Activities
designer: R Martensson
engraver: Czesław Słania

The snow has stayed for a week on country roads and I couldn’t take the risk of riding on frozen surfaces.  It was raining all day today, so maybe tomorrow we have the chance to ride?

The detail in this stamp is great, as enlarged below.  Slania has proven that single coloured stamps can be very enjoyable.

February 3, 2010

*exch.033 & 034 ( both limited number )

24 October 1970 Sweden
25th Anniversary of United Nations

design: L.-E. Lallerstedt
engrave: Czeslaw Slania

I thought ‘three hearts’ could have been issued for St. Valentine’s Day – although it wasn’t, still makes me happy.  Three four-leaved clovers as well.  They are engraved by Czeslaw Slania, very crisp and worth looking into them with magnifier.

Island in wave /

November 19, 2009

1933 Denmark
issued 1990 ( 25 øre ) and 1983 ( 100 øre )
design by J. Therchilsen in 1906
engraver J. Britze ( original 1933 ) and Czeslaw Slania ( 25 øre )

Both based on a definitive stamp design from 1906, and modified a little bit in 1933.  It is graphically stabled and very clear to carry charactor of the country, as well as liberal enough to limit expression of the royal Coat of arms – many reasons could be think of why the design of this stamp had survived this long.

May 4, 2009

5 May 1997 China
Rare Birds  ‘
design: 曽孝濂 & Inga-Karin Eriksson

I like pheasant, the way their tails bob around as they run cross the road.  Somehow I never see them flying.

This stamp was a joint issue between China and Sweden, on theme of rare birds.  Two stamps were issued and this one is depicting Swedish ‘Common Pheasant’.  Swedish stamps of same design has C. Slania’s name printed.
