January 23, 2019

15 September 1961, Austria
15th Anniversary of Nationalized Industries: Turbine
design: A. Pilch / engraver: Georg Wimmer

Another stamp depicting a factory interior with a large rotor of a generator.  Looks like a massive and heavy machine, diagonally hung from a gantry – and somehow it evokes lightness.  Beautiful intaglio work.

Steelworks /

15th Anniversary of Nationalized Industries: Steelworks, Linz
design: A. Pilch / engraver: Georg Wimmer

A modest mono colour, but with elaborate engraving makes this stamp very powerful.

operating key / 送信中

15 August 1985, Vietnam
40th Anniversary of Postal and Telecommunications Service

Another stamp which is showing the Telegraph key in operation.  Behind the operator, you can also see the modern interior of a domestic house.  And the stamp below, with Dish aerial was issued at the same time.

Somehow I have this impression – Socialist countries tend to feature working women in their stamps.  Or maybe only my eyes tend to stop on those women at work?

4 November 2004, Belgium
Explorers on the Moon‘ by Hergé, 1954

I like this interior colour – Hergé must have been influenced by his contemporary designers, such as Jean Prouvé.  Design details for light weight structures and round corners of drawers, dots on the floor… they all are reflecting the atmosphere of that time.

Why do I categorise this in ‘kawaii/cute’? – the back view of Snowy… his skinny neck is so cute!

reading a letter / 文読み

1 October 1969 Japan
‘Reading a letter’ by Harunobu Suzuki, 1750

This stamp was issued for Universal Postal Union Congress, showing a woman reading a long letter, in her house with great detail of Tatami mat, sliding wooden panels with paper, and a Bonsai pot on wooden floored terrace.

Harunobu Suzuki ( 1724? – 1770 ) was a woodblock print artist and invented slim long legged girls as his style.  A reprint of the original art is in the collection of Postal Museum Japan.

November 20, 2010

24 August 2007, Finland
‘2+3’ wallpaper by Ilmari and Annikki Tapiovaara in 1958
‘Paimio’ chair by Alvar Aalto in 1931-32
‘Pavroo Garland’ wallpaper in Biedermeier style
Empire style chair

design: Pekka Piipo

I am amazed at how just a few elements can express a sense of  interior.  Wallpaper, the corner of a picture frame, a chair and its shadow – they are enough to convey the atmosphere of the room and taste of the owner.

Lwówek Śląski town hall /

November 19, 2010

15 June 1966 Germany
Town Hall of Löwenberg Schlesien ( Lwówek Śląski )

The second ‘interior’ feature is another vaulted interior, in a town hall in Poland, which used to be a part of Germany.  This was one of the definitive stamps featuring monumental buildings.  I searched for how old the building could be but failed to find it, apart from this image.

With very fine engraved lines in different thickness and pitches, the depth of the space is depicted in a small definitive stamp.

28 February 1966 UK
900th Anniversary of Westminster Abbey
design & engraving: Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co.

I am amazed sometimes by a stamp design which is depicting the depth of a room and sense of space within a little piece of paper.  So, I added a category today to collect these stamps showing ‘interior space’.

This stamp is showing Fan Vaulting of the Henry Ⅶ Chapel, which was built in 16th century.  This was the last stamp with the portrait of the Queen before an introduction of her silhouette, and the portrait is beautifully engraved to match the impressive interior.
