January 30, 2018

13 February 2001, United Kingdom
Cats & Dogs
photographer: Henri Cartier-Bresson ( 1908-2004 )
design: Johnson Banks

With photography it is possible to capture a moment – yes that is why we cannot stop taking snaps.  Somehow Black & White shows a frozen moment clearer, I think.

5 October 1983, United Kingdom
British Fairs / Early Produce Fairs
design: Andrew Restall

Another stamp from UK, depicts horses as a part of a summer farm fair.  They transported vegetables and geese to the farmer’s markets.

And a cat.

year of the cat / ねこ年

December 30, 2011

1 December 2010, Vietnam
design: Nguyen Du

After I wrote ‘four days to the end of the year of Rabbit’, I realised that at the origin of the Chinese zodiac, new year does not come until 23 January 2012.  Also in Vietnam, one of the countries to follow the tradition of the Chinese zodiac, this year is the year of Cat.  This set of stamps were issued at the end of 2010, for the new year celebration of 2011.

Yes, the world consists of great diversity.  I want to learn more about those interesting differences and how people express their originality, through the world of stamps.

I wish you all have a happy new year.

Oak leaves and a cat /

November 8, 2011

21 September 1979, Japan
‘Black Cat’ (1910) by Shunso Hishida (1874-1911)
layout: Yoshiaki Kikuchi

The cat is sitting on an Oak tree – we are more familiar with straight Oak trees, but sometimes it is bendy and provides a good place for a cat.

The painter Shunso Hishida started to bring innovative techniques into traditional Japanese painting around 1900.  He traveled to India, America and Europe between 1903-05, after which he even tried pointillism – but the Japanese painting authorities did not accept him at that time.  It is a pity that he died young and did not try to stir up the artistic circles further.

cool cats from South Africa / 南アフリカの猫

1972 South Africa
100 years of SPCA, Animal Welfare of South Africa

The World Cup has started – I am not really a football fan, but being interested in the hosting country South Africa and its complicated history.  I have very limited numbers of stamps from South Africa yet – and this one is my favorite, cool colour and composition.  It is a bit off-centred, though.

1960’s cat /

March 17, 2010

27 May 1967, Bulgaria
design: M. Peikova & V. Vasileva
cats: Abyssinian, European black & white

After featuring 5 bicycle stamps, mean looking cats for change.  Maybe they aren’t really mean, but just not ingratiating at all.  Somehow, colour combinations of these stamps evoke me 1960’s atmosphere.

Black Ship Inn /

February 14, 2010

27 October 1980 Japan
‘Kurofune-ya’ painting by Yumeji Takehisa (1884-1934)

The artist Yumeji Takehisa was an early example of commercial illustratior and graphic designer, as well as a poet.  He was one of first artists who went abroad, tried to open a school for illustration and design.

This was painted on rolled silk on paper as ‘hanging’, around 1919.  The title of this painting ‘Black Ship Inn’ came from the wodden box the model is sitting on – a sign of an inn named after a large ship from America, led by Matthew C. Perry.  This ship, first arrived to Japan in 1853,  was the direct force for Edo Shogun to open the counrty.  Later, the image of Black Ship was turned positive, as symbol of Westernising and industrial development.

Nature Conservation Series /

August 28, 2009

1974 (top) and 1976 (middle and botton) Japan
Nature Conservation Series: Mayailurus iriomotensis (Iriomote Wild Cat), Geoemyda spengleri japonica (Ryukyu Leaf Turtle), Rhacophorus arbreus

Mixed to methods of photogravure print and Intaglio, this set of express delicate texture of different aninals – rare species of Japan in 1976.

The Iriomote Wild Cat of first stamp is now critically endangered.  Ryukyu Leaf Turtle is endangered as well.  The frog is surviving all right!

11 July 1979 UK
International Year of the Child
designed by Edward Hughes

Famous illustration from British stories for children.  From top ‘Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland’ by Lewis Carroll ( illustration by John Tenniel ), ‘The Wind in the Willows’ by Kenneth Grahame ( illustration by Ernest H Shepard ), ‘Winnie-the-Pooh’ by A. A. Milne ( illustration by Ernest H Shepard )and ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’ by Beatrix Potter.  I like their restricted sweetness and balance between colours and White.  Very stylishly British.

2 February 1968 Germany Berlin
‘Wildlife’ Wildcat, Otter, Badger and Beaber

I am not a keen collector of animal stamps, but I cannot resist good designed cat stamps.  There are many cat stamps, but hard to find one I like.  All four in this series are picturesque and graphically good, too.

wild cat or tiger?

1983 South Korea

This was the first stamp I bought for purpose for collection, when I traveled to Seoul in 1991.  Graphically modified beautiful stripy wild cat – in fact, it is a tiger – had its origin from folk painting of Korea.
