Until recently, I wasn’t aware that different symbols are representing the activities of the Red Cross in some Asian countries – such as Red Crescent and Red Lion with Sun. The distant memories of Crusades was still kept by many people even in the 19th century when global human rights were established…

On this stamp, all symbols are shown as united activities in war zones and other humanitarian disasters.

ごく最近になって赤十字社を取り上げた切手を調べるようになって、他にもこの活動を表したシンボルがあることを知りました。この切手にある赤い三日月と、ライオンと太陽の絵柄です。19世紀に国境を超えた難民救済の活動が始まった時にはまだ、十字軍が攻めて来た古い記憶が残っていて十字架と似ている赤十字が敬遠された歴史があったのですね。

この切手には、そういう歴史を超えて活動してきた赤十字を記念して、すべてのシンボルが平和の鳩と一緒に描かれています。
