Since the invasion started, I noticed that I have many Red Cross stamps already, but I wasn’t aware of them. This is one of the earliest issued of those stamps with contribution towards the Red Cross.

In this year, the Red Cross was important in Finland – only 5 years after independence from Russia which was followed by Finnish Civil War. I had a kind of peaceful image of Scandinavian countries, but they were often standing at the front lines against a demanding large country.

ロシアのウクライナ侵攻が始まってから気づいたのは、赤十字社を取り上げた切手を実はたくさん持っていたけれど、載っているロゴが赤十字だと理解していなかったことです。これもその一つで、寄付金付きの切手でした。

この切手が発行された頃のフィンランドは、ソビエトとなったロシアの支配から独立した直後に内戦を経た直後で、赤十字社の活躍と寄付が必要だったことは間違いないです。「平和な北欧」という印象を持っていたのですが、実はいつも領土を拡大したい大国に隣接した厳しい歴史があったのですね。
