In this unusual time, I noticed that I didn’t know much about the international initiatives for war victims. The Red Cross is one of them, which was started in 1863, and continues to today with global networks, for helping war and natural disaster victims.

This stamp is issued between the 1st and 2nd World Wars. It is designed with a contemporary spirit, showing the transition of style from Art Nouveau to Art Déco. If you compare this to a Japanese stamp from 1934 (featured in this blog in 2009) below, you will see how advanced is this abstract expression of the birds.

戦争が始まって初めて、国際的な団体が戦争や紛争の犠牲者を守るために作られ維持されてきた団体について、いかに無知だったかに気づきました。赤十字社はそんな活動の先駆けとなった組織で、1863年にスイス人の提案によって始まり、今に至るまで紛争や自然災害の被害者を助けるべく国際的に連携されています。

この切手は2度の世界大戦の間の1927年に発行されたもので、アールヌーヴォーからアール・デコへの過渡期だった当時の流行を反映したモダンなデザインです。同時代に発行された他の切手や、7年後の1934年に発行された、上の写真の赤十字の国際会議を記念した日本の切手（2009年にこのブログで掲載しました）と比べると、この抽象化された線描のデザインがとても斬新だったことがわかります。
