Despite its elegant shape and colour, this family of ground beetles is a snail hunter, thus its Japanese name is “wearing snail” as it is often found with its head in a snail shell! I want them to protect my garden vegetables!

エレガントな色と形を持つこのオサムシの仲間は、カタツムリを捕まえて食べる肉食昆虫でした。「マイマイカブリ」という名前も、カタツムリの殻に頭をつっこんで食事中に、かぶっているように見えるからだとは。この夏、カタツムリとナメクジに庭の野菜をたっぷり食べられたので、このマイマイカブリを見つけたらそっと連れて帰りたい、、。
