Only 20 years after the Gutenberg Bible, already in England the new technology of letterpress printing had been developed and large numbers of publications were produced.

These stamps with letters from that time and a picture of a printing workshop are showing British printer William Caxton’s works.  He was the first English publisher that produced commercial books.  His printer’s device is quite beautiful.

グーテンベルグが考案した活版印刷を使って『グーテンベルク聖書』と呼ばれる聖書を印刷してから20年のちに、すでにイギリスで印刷と出版を手がける人が手できていました。情報のつまった「本」という存在が、多くの人を魅了したのですね。

2枚の切手がイギリスで出版業の先駆けとなったウィリアム・カクストンの仕事と、印刷所の様子を伝えています。記念消印にも使われた彼の印刷物の紋章は、古風で美しい文字と模様の構成です。
