Great Britons, The Black Prince (1330 – 1376)

On the theme of horses and knights in armour – I am thinking to step into a new area of ‘heraldry‘ stamps – a recent favourite theme of my collection.

Edward, The Black Prince was the first English Prince of Wales in the 14th century and he was very popular as a strong military leader.

My reference book “Heraldry Stamps” (published in 1987, JPN) tells me about the patterns and significance of his decoration in this picture.

馬と甲冑の騎士、『偉大なブリテン島の人』のシリーズから。さすがに、ここを起点に馬から離れて「紋章の切手」に進むことにします。紋章も、大好きなモチーフなのです。

これは「エドワード黒太子」と呼ばれ、イギリス系で最初にプリンス・オブ・ウェールズの称号がついた皇太子で、百年戦争で活躍した人気の高い軍人でした。

この紋章がどんな意味を持つのか、『紋章の切手（1987年発刊）』という本に詳細があり、この切手の図案がどの原典から起こされたのかの推測もあって興味が尽きないのでした。
