A squirrel, a bird on a nest and an owl – they are representing modest and wise home management, such as saving money at the Post Office Savings Bank.
This squirrel looks like a Red Squirrel, the native kind before the Grey Squirrel came to dominate most of Britain. They occasionally take a long sleep when the weather is very cold, but normally not going into hibernation for long.
貯蓄の象徴として描かれているリス。巣を作る小鳥や森の賢者と言われるふくろうと一緒に、堅実に将来に備える郵便貯金の100年記念の切手に登場です。
オレンジ色のリスはキタリスです。近ごろ見かけないのは、アメリカから持ち込まれたハイイロリスが繁殖してキタリスをスコットランドまで追いやってしまったからなのだそうです。どちらも長い冬眠はしないけれど、真冬には巣の中から数日出て来ない、と説明されています。
このテーマと図柄に、宝石をちりばめた王冠とネックレスの女王はいかにも不釣り合い、、、女王の肖像がだんだんと小さくなってついにはシルエットに変わるのは、この切手の5年後のことです。
