15 February 1973, Switzerland
Gargoyle, Berne Cathedral
Roman Capital, Jean-Baptiste Church, Grandson
design: H. Hartmann
engrave: A Yersin

There are Chinese origin dragons and European mythical dragons. European dragons have wings, as well as a long beak with sharp teeth – often their mouths are wide open and spitting fire. I think the top one is a dragon head ( with a crown and fancy lace ) gargoyle.

I enjoy spotting creatures that live on architecture in European cities and towns. A Gargoyle is a carved stone figure with a spout designed to convey water from a roof. They are often imaginary creatures or angry faced humans – grotesque. If you want to break into a church at night, they will scare you off for sure.

The second stamp shows a capital in the Church of Sain-Jean-Baptiste in Grandson, Saint Michael is killing a dragon with a spear.

1959 Turkey
50 years of Maritime High School

I used the top stamp for my studio’s new year celebration image, since the New Year is the year of the Dragon. Because the Japanese name of the creature in the sea is translated as ‘Child of Dragon’, I thought it was called Sea Dragon in English, too.

Now I know that the Sea Dragon is leafy one, or like algae – and the normal ones are named Sea Horse. Maybe all non-Japanese people did not get why I used the Sea Horse… never mind!

This set is celebrating the Turkish Maritime school in Istanbul. I visited Istanbul for the first time last year. Beautiful view it has, surrounded by oceans – it is an important place between Europe and Asia.

1982 Hong Kong

After a pair of Dragon and Tiger, next one is the Dragon and Lion on both sides of the Queen.

It is obvious that the lion with a crown is the sovereign Britain and the dragon is the symbol of Hong Kong. Their paws are wide open, eyes are slanted upward and tongues are stuck out – they seem not to be in a peaceful relationship at all. 15 years to go for the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong. Brave postal officers. Sharrrrrrr.

1 November 1971, Japan
Government Printing Works Centenary
tonal-engraving based on ‘Ryu-ko zu’ by Hashimoto Gahō ( 1835-1908 )
Dragon and Tiger

The year of the Dragon has started ( at least in Japan yesterday, so I follow this one. ) I wish you all have a fruitful year – we should really prove that our happiness is not controlled by the unstable situation of the world’s finances.

These stamps, a set of two, were issued to celebrate 100 years of stamp and banknote printing. So, they are naturally representative of what they can do best for this kind of process. Surely they took time to do the details of the waves. I have to look up what ‘tonal engraving’ could be – if I magnify, it seems the tone is made by lines and dots together.

Paper as well, seems a little special for this printing.

2010 Vietnam

After I wrote ‘four days to the end of the year of Rabbit’, I realised that at the origin of the Chinese zodiac, new year does not come until 23 January 2012. Also in Vietnam, one of the countries to follow the tradition of the Chinese zodiac, this year is the year of Cat. This set of stamps were issued at the end of 2010, for the new year celebration of 2011.

Yes, the world consists of great diversity. I want to learn more about those interesting differences and how people express their originality, through the world of stamps.

I wish you all have a happy new year.

15 March 2005, UK
‘Centenary of the Magic Circle’
design: G. Hardie and Tatham Design

I met a Japanese magician this summer, who told me about the Magic Circle, where he performed sometime ago. I remembered the story now, because I found this set of stamps, which are celebrating the Magic Circle’s 100 years.

Following their tradition with a top hat and a tailcoat, these pop designs recreate nice visual illusions within small stamps – pity you cannot rub digital images, but I feature one which I scratched with a coin.

I have ‘head’ of the coin, not ‘tail’.

The year of the rabbit is ceasing in four days. I have this feeling that a year gets shorter and shorter – is it proving the fact that I am getting older faster!?

16 February 1999, UK
‘Profile on Print’ booklet
embossed by Walsall Security Printers
based on original design by Arnold Machin
self-adhesive

Can you not see the Queen? Please click the image larger.

When the first Penny Black was introduced in 1840, the post office must have sold them a lot and made a fortune – the second printing method they introduced after intaglio, in 1847, was the rather costly technique of embossing.

This embossed Machin was made to celebrate those rare ( and now expensive ) achievements of 1847-1854 high value definitives. The die for the press was based on the original Machin cast.

Taking photos of this stamp was not easy! Different light creates a diversity of expression in the Queen’s face. One looks more prominent of relief but shows an anxious face, another is paler but with a noble atmosphere. I experienced some of the difficulties of the team who took the photo for the Machin stamps in 1967.

16 February 1999, UK
‘Profile on Print’ booklet
letterpress
scraperboard: Bill Sanderson
based on original design by Arnold Machin

This stamp is one of the celebrations of Machin’s stamp, representing the design in the letterpress method. The artwork was made using the scraperboard technique, which was widely used for newspaper, book and magazine illustrations until the 1960s – lines are carved through the black ink coating of the board revealing the white clay surface beneath. Sanderson is one of the few remaining artists using this technique.

His reduced and controlled way of using the knife is recreating the Queens face in the Machin’s relief – not at all easy, I would imagine… I first found his works in Gavin Pretor Pinney’s book ‘The Cloudspotter’s Guide‘ – incredible depictions of clouds in black and white.

based on original design by Arnold Machin

This intaglio engraved by the master Czesław Słania was issued to celebrate The 2000 Stamp Show. After 48 years of his career, Słania’s polished technique to make three dimensional expression by controlled lines are fully exhibited in much larger format, over double the size of the definitive.

But, somehow this does not look like the Machin original – it does not represent the youth of the Queen, I guess. Perhaps Słania’s precision urged him to reflect the Time and Tide since the relief was made.

5 June 1967, UK
Queen Elizabeth II definitive
photo gravure
design: after plaster cast by Arnold Machin

The last post was my first feature of a monarch portrait – the second stamp is her great grand-daughter, current Queen of the UK. This is probably the most repeatedly used profile in stamp history.

According to the ‘Profile on Print’ leaflet (1999), the sculptor Arnold Machin made pencil sketches first, then sculpted a relief in clay. Then he took a plaster mould, which he refined by hand – afterwards taking another plaster cast to bring the features back to relief. Finally, after ‘numerous trials’ a photograph was taken ‘using north daylight with a precise amount of cloud over the sun’. Phew!

I like this ultimate simplicity of design – of course inspired by the very first stamp, but pared down to the minimum. Here are some process records shown, featured in Going Postal blog from New Zealand.

The six stamps below were issued following years – I have not counted yet how many stamps were issued since the first one – still going now.

p.s. Someone did count the number of Machins and there are so far 440 of them.

15 September 2011, United Kingdom
‘Penny Black – 184o’
Kings & Queens, The Age of Hanoverians
design: Atelier Works

‘Collect GB Stamps‘ by Royal Mail covers almost all stamps issued in the United Kingdom since the world’s first adhesive postage stamp – the Penny Black. I don’t have the real one, so here is a stamp that features it.

The archive site has huge image records, scanned presentation pack covers, and articles on each stamp. This is a great archive, but could be improved a lot by featuring the people and stories behind the stamps – designers, creators of original art works, engravers and printers.

As far as I can see, this is the 6th time the first stamp design has been depicted, firstly in 1940 ‘Centerary of First Adhesive Postage Stamps’, in 1970 ‘Philympia 70 – the stamps exhibition’, in 1990 ’150th Anniverersary of the Penny Black’, in 1992 ‘Greeting Stamps – Memories’, in 1995 ‘Pioneers of Communications’ and finally the one featured above.

1 September 1971, New Zealand
Mount Cook National Park
design: Mark Cleverley

I found another stamp archive from New Zealand, which tells me the stories of historical stamps. So, I will start collecting stamps from the new world, as I can find the year of issue and name of the designer who made this rather unusual colour of sky. I couldn’t find what are the animals in this stamp, though.

The archive tells me that the first New Zealand stamp motif was Queen Victoria.

1 July 1859, Canada
Beaver
design: Sandford Fleming
engraver: Alfred Jones

I am a fan of Canadian stamps, especially when I learned the fact that their first stamp featured a Beaver! OK, they made higher value stamps with the heads of Prince Albert and Queen Victoria at almost the same time, but they were issued a month later. This perforated 5 cent stamp was the third edition of their very first Beaver, using the same design.

Another reason why I am a fan of Canadian stamps – is this fantastic archive. People who made this archive are proud of their history and like to talk about the designers and artists involved. I can see the face of the engraver, who carved a smiling sun behind the Beaver 160 years ago – this is great!

‘A beaver building a dam was symbolic of the people in the young country of Canada building their towns, cities, and communities’ – this is the reason behind the first stamp, according to the article in this archive.

Another stamp with the Canadian Maple leaf, this time the main feature is their National animal, the Beaver. This is the result of works by three people, the artist of the original art work, the designer and the engraver ( the job is completed by the printer, of course ). It is interesting to read about them – their routes are from Germany, Holland and Canada.

The engraving work is really delicate and enjoyable to magnify… I know it’s a bit minor, but joyful!

This stamp allows me to imagine the chilly and fresh air of the late autumn in Canada. Beautifully simple.

‘Black Cat’ (1910) by Shunso Hishida (1874-1911)

The cat is sitting on an Oak tree – we are more familiar with straight Oak trees, but sometimes it is bendy and provides a good place for a cat.

The painter Shunso Hishida started to bring innovative techniques into traditional Japanese painting around 1900. He traveled to India, America and Europe between 1903-05, after which he even tried pointillism – but the Japanese painting authorities did not accept him at that time. It is a pity that he died young and did not try to stir up the artistic circles further.

‘Fruits of the Forest’ Oak and Beech

I am enjoying the autumn leaves here in London. Not just the colours but the sound of them. One morning I was walking towards the station and heard a strange series of sounds – it was acorns falling, hitting the pavement, rolling down the hill and finally hitting a wooden fence.

This set of stamps shows typical European trees – and reminds me of the sound and smell of a damp forest.

4 November 2004, Belgium
‘Explorers on the Moon‘ by Hergé, 1954

I like this interior colour – Hergé must have been influenced by his contemporary designers, such as Jean Prouvé. Design details for light weight structures and round corners of drawers, dots on the floor… they all are reflecting the atmosphere of that time.

Why do I categorise this in ‘kawaii/cute’? – the back view of Snowy… his skinny neck is so cute!
