These two stamps are showing gleaming squid and ‘Marimo’ Moss Balls, both in the water.  The coarsely finished paper and 2-3 coloured Gravure printing are cost effective and matching very well to the motifs – translucency of squid and reflected light on fish and delicate surface of the Moss Balls…  Spot-on job!

2枚とも水中の、ホタルイカとマリモの描かれた普通切手。ざらっとした紙の質感に2~3色で重ねたグラビア印刷のけっして高価ではない手法ですが、濃淡の調整が細やかで、ホタルイカの少し透けている質感や、マリモの表面の細かな水泡と魚の背が水上からの光を反射させている様子などが巧みに表現されています。丁寧な仕事です。

‘Caritas’

Charity stamps, known also as semi-postal, were a great invention to collect charitable funds to support people who need help.

Caritas, named after the Latin for ‘charity’ or ‘virtue’, was formed by Catholic members in 1897.  Their mission was to make a better world, especially for poor and oppressed people. I consulted the history of Belgium around 1927, but did not discover who Caritas were raising money for in this case.  Whoever the people in the boat are, the stamps are in impressive contrast between sad faces and the abstract lines of waves – appealing for help.

ヨーロッパには古くから援助の精神があったようですが、切手の額面を少し増やして義援金を集める寄附金付き切手は1890年代に発行されはじめたようです。

「Caritas」は1897年にドイツで設立され今も続くカソリック系の団体です。援助は貧困に苦しむ人たち、政治的にしいたげられた人たちなど向けられますが、この切手の1927年のベルギーで、荒れた海に浮かぶ小さな舟に乗っていたのが誰だったのか、調べてみたけれどわかりませんでした。誰だったにしろ、悲しみに沈む表情と象徴的な波の描写が印象に残る切手です。

Another five stamps complete the set.  Again, a variety of coastlines are shown – characteristic chalk cliffs, sunbathing people on beach, beach huts lined up, sailing boats, and a coast road alongside old mining industry.

Although I am not a great fan of stamps with photography, I have to admit photoraphy has the power to stop a moment and show us documentary fact.

この「海岸線」切手は10枚で1セットです。残りの5枚も載せます。切り立った石灰岩の崖、ビーチで日光浴する人たち、海辺の小屋が並ぶ海岸、浅瀬を迂回するボート、古い採鉱跡地。

写真が使われた切手はどちらかというと好みではないのですが、写真は「瞬間を切り取って」事実をみせてくれ、自分の住んでいる地球のことを教えてくれることに改めて気づきます。

Coastlines are cultural interfaces between ‘native’ and ‘overseas’.  This set of stamps with aerial photos around the British Isles are showing geographical fact and the lives of people, who protected their land from invaders, the ports for importers and fishermen to bring food, as well as the farmers working on flat land.

This series of satellite photos from the New York Times show us that the Tsunami has taken thousands of lives from the East coast of North Japan, and had destroyed history and culture alongside a long section of the coastline.

海岸線は単に海と陸の境界線というだけでなく、海を越えて人がたどり着く場所であり、攻めて来る敵から土地を守る人びとの戦いの歴史があり、物資が運びこまれ食料の魚が集まる港、平坦な海岸沿いには農家が作物を植えて、、、と、この切手の航空写真を見るだけでも豊かな文化が育まれる場所だということがわかります。

ニューヨーク・タイムズに掲載さたこの衛星写真は、津波が一瞬にしてたくさんの命を奪い、同時に海岸沿いに豊かに育まれていた歴史や文化をめちゃくちゃに壊していったのだ、という事実をわたしたちにつきつけます。

save energy / 省エネルギー

Energy Saving

It is not well broadcast abroad that in most of Tokyo people are having planned power cuts, up to 3.5 hours a day.  Many shops are open with reduced illumination, as well as in stations.  They must have a difficult time, even if they expect the black out they have to build their life around it.  But there are some positive comments on their situation – one found that the stars are so beautiful when the street lamps are out, another thought a restaurant was nice and intimate with a table lamp.

I thought I could find several stamps about Energy Saving, but found only a set of two, which were issued in 1981, just after the second oil crisis.  Since then people forgot to think about it for long time and power plants were built to sustain our wasteful habits.

首都圏の計画停電でたくさんの人が交通の乱れなどを体験している様子は、ここ英国のメディアでほとんど取り上げられていません。きっと毎日の生活で、細かく不便なことがたくさんあるだろうと思います。そんな中でも「店や駅もこれくらいの明るさで充分、今までがエスカレートしすぎだった」とか「街灯の消えた空にびっくりするほどたくさんの星が見えた」というようなコメントを見かけると、日本はこの困難を抜けた時にきっとより良い場所になる、と思えます。

省エネルギーに関する切手はきっとたくさんあるだろうと思ったら、日本ではこの1981年のセットだけでした。それ以降はバブルに突入し、だれも「ビルの広告明るすぎない？」と言わなくなった。そして、工業を促進して明るい夜を支えるために、発電所が建て続けられた。環境問題への意識が高まったここ数年にも、省エネルギーに関する日本の切手は見つからず。それは正直、驚きでした。

I like to find working women in stamps and there are a lot in Chinese ones.  Well, I do not really know what they are doing, though…  making Rainbow?

働く女性の描かれた切手が好きです。その、励まそうとしている感じが。この中国の切手の場合は、この二人の若い女性がポンプのような装置で何をしているのかは、、、謎です。虹を作ってるのかな？

追記：『新中国切手カタログ』によると、これは「民軍は同家族」というプロパガンダ切手でした。でも、この散水が何のためかは不明。

Ice Crystals / 雪の結晶

Water forms beautiful crystals when the atmosphere becomes minus zero.  This morning, I had to scrape my car before start to drive – I wish I had time to bring my magnifier to see them.  It was a winter morning and I did not have time!  In ‘the iciest web site in the world’, you can see 12 different patterns of ice crystals recorded in 1902 by Wilson Bentley.

By the way, is it only me to think that it would be graphically nicer if the centre of the stamp is centralised to the ice crystals?

Additional note: Wilson Bentley’s original ‘Photomicrograph’ works are recently in auction and some larger iamges are available here ( on 23 Jan 2010 ) .

今朝、路上に停めてある車のフロントガラスがかちかちに凍っていました。水は氷点下で素敵な結晶を作ります。あわてて融かさないでゆっくり観察すればよかった。冬の朝は、なにかと忙しいですね。ちなみに、結晶の形は温度と水蒸気量のバランスで決まるそうです。大阪市立大学のHPより。

それにしても、この切手のちょうど真ん中に結晶のイラストが配置されたらもっと格好良いのに、、、と思うのはわたしだけですか？

追記：1902年にWilson Bentleyが撮影した’Photomicrograph’という手法のオリジナルの写真が最近（2010年1月23日現在）、オークションに出されてこのサイトで見る事ができます。

delta works completed / 堤防が完成しました

Celebrating their works on delta protection completed, it shows how the storm tamed within controlled bay – so their birds are secured, too.  Again, a lot of information in small stamp – but nicely designed.  I like the little ‘c’ is located between 6 and 5, otherwise easy to be missed out.  75 cent stamp has illustration of people hand in hand, creating levee… a bit over-descriptive, isn’t it?

防水事業の完成を祝っている1986年のオランダの切手。高ぶる波も堤防を越えず、野鳥も保護されているようです。小さな面積にたくさんの情報が詰め込まれていますが、色合いのおかげかすっきりしています。一枚目、数字6と5の間にこっそりあるセントの「c」がかわいい。2枚目の75セントは人々が手に手をとって堤防を築き、、、というのがちょっと説明過多な気がするのはわたしだけでしょうか？

Following theme of yesterday – another stamp of water.  Promoting usage of spas.  I like this beautiful colour mixture of Intaglio print.

水をテーマにした切手をもう一枚。温泉利用を推進する切手のようです。凹版印刷のインクの混じったあたりが美しい効果を出しています。

water ripples / 水紋

Are they a kind of definitives?  Simple idea and mysterious cut shape self adhesive stamps.  I may use this as a square stamp to avoid wasting  large part of water ripple print.

これは普通切手の一種でしょうか？シンプルな発想で、不思議な形に切られているセルフのりの切手。きれいだけど、捨てる部分が多すぎてもったいなく、結局、ふつうの正方形で貼りこんでしまいそうです。

Moomin / ムーミン

Stories of Moomin valley is very popular in Japan, but I recognise that it is not well known in the UK.  Finish post has issued several set of stamps on this children books, which were fist published in 1954.

In this set of stamps from 2007, Moominmama is cooking outdoor.  Also they tell us that Finland is a contry of water.

ムーミンは日本では誰もが知っているけれど、英国ではあまり知られていません。フィンランドではムーミンに題材をとった切手がたくさん発行されています。

このシリーズではムーミンママが湖畔のたき火で料理をしています。トンボや咲き乱れる花が晩夏を思わせる色合いで、フィンランドが水の国であることを教えてくれます。
