Cool mono colours, crisp intaglio engraving and simple composition.  These stamps evoke an adoration for the short and precious Northern Summer and praiseworthy energy of trees.

かりっとした彫り線とシンプルな構成で、単色なのに素敵な仕上がりのアイスランドの切手です。冬を生き延びてまた葉をつけるけなげな木々を丁寧に描き、到来を待ちわびる短い北の夏を象徴しているようです。

fresh leaves / 若葉の季節

Here in South East England, we have been having this extreme weather – blue sky in the morning and thunder and heavy rain in the afternoon – for last two weeks.  These rains must be giving a great relief to farmers, forests and all plants in the country, after the record dry winter.  The little buds on the Silver Birch tree in front of our house have grown significantly.  Summer soon? ( or too early to say? )

This set of stamps from Finland were issued last year, using the same die-cut tool as the Water Ripple stamps in 2008 – the shape is working better this time, I think.

ロンドンでは「午前は快晴、でも午後から雷が鳴ってどしゃ降り」という天気がここ2週間ほど続いています。雨の少なかった冬の後で水不足が心配されていたから、農家や森の木々にとっては恵みの雨です。やっぱり水が足りていなかったのか、家の前のシラカバも今年は新芽が遅かったのですが、ここ数日で小さいながらも葉っぱの形になってきました。夏はすぐそこか（それにしては寒い！）？

このフィンランドの切手は2008年の水シリーズの「押し切り型」を使い回しているようですが、、、こっちのほうが図柄としっくり合っている気がしません？

Maple leaf / カエデの赤

The Maple leaf is the queen of autumn colour for me and of course, the Canadian national symbol as shown on their flag.  Even a small Maple tree shows its existence very strongly in this season.

This stamp allows me to imagine the chilly and fresh air of the late autumn in Canada.  Beautifully simple.

隣家の庭先や道の脇の木立でひときわ赤い色を放っているカエデ（メープル）の木を見るにつけ、カナダの国旗にも描かれているメープルは秋の色の女王だなぁ、と思います。日本の秋の山を彩るもみじもカエデの仲間ですね。

凛とした晩秋の空気を感じさせてくれる切手。これ以上なにも必要ないシンプルさで大好きな一枚です。

Oak leaves and a cat / ナラの上の『黒き猫』

‘Black Cat’ (1910) by Shunso Hishida (1874-1911)

The cat is sitting on an Oak tree – we are more familiar with straight Oak trees, but sometimes it is bendy and provides a good place for a cat.

The painter Shunso Hishida started to bring innovative techniques into traditional Japanese painting around 1900.  He traveled to India, America and Europe between 1903-05, after which he even tried pointillism – but the Japanese painting authorities did not accept him at that time.  It is a pity that he died young and did not try to stir up the artistic circles further.

オークは木材用のものはまっすぐですが、こんなに曲がった育ち方をすることもあるのですね。

原画は明治時代の夭折の画家、菱田春草の『黒き猫』という作品です。1900年頃から輪郭線を使わない画法を試していたこの画家は、岡倉天心と一緒にアメリカとヨーロッパを旅し、帰国後には点描で日本画を描くことを試したようです。「ジャポニズムの影響を受けて始まった」とされる印象派の作品に触れ、その革新に刺激されたのだろうか？と推測するのも面白いです。

Oak and Horse-chestnut / ナラとトチノキ

They are both common trees in Europe.  Oak is widely used for furniture and building materials, whilst on the other hand Horse-chestnut, which is popular in parks and on roadside greens, is rarely used for furniture or other purposes.

ナラとマロニエ（セイヨウトチノキ)の葉が描かれています。どちらもヨーロッパの森や街路でよく見かける木です。ナラ（オーク）は伝統的に家具につかわれてきた素材ですが、マロニエを使った家具というのはほとんど見かけません。マロニエとして親しまれているフランスでは、何かに使われているのかな？

autumn leaves / 紅葉

I am enjoying the autumn leaves here in London.  Not just the colours but the sound of them.  One morning I was walking towards the station and heard a strange series of sounds – it was acorns falling, hitting the pavement, rolling down the hill and finally hitting a wooden fence.

This set of stamps shows typical European trees – and reminds me of the sound and smell of a damp forest.

今年の秋は例年に比べても秋が美しい気がします。木々の色だけでなく、音も楽しい。ある朝、駅まで歩く道のりに不思議な連続音を聞いて立ち止まると、それはどんぐりが木から落ちて舗道を打ち、そのまま坂道を転がって民家の板塀を打つ音でした。

この2枚の切手はナラとブナの葉と実のようすを描いて、しめった森の匂いと枯れ葉の上を歩く音を思い出させてくれます。

It was windy and rainy typical autumn weather here last two days, the Epping Forest is wet and colourful – autumn leaves and coloured fruits.

These stamps are printed with ‘Conventional gravure’ method, which makes printing ink appear thick on the paper, allowing glossy depth in the picture.  They are symbolical stamps for me to represent impression of Britain.

ここ数日雨が降りつづけ、エッピングの森はしっとりとして秋の色がますます深まりました。

この切手シリーズは「コンベンショナル・グラビア」という腐食版をもちいた手法で印刷され、インクの重量感や光沢が深い秋の色をあざやかに表現しています。湿度ある秋の匂いまで感じさせてくれる切手です。

forest heritage of the future / 資産としての森

This stamp is celebrating the 10th anniversary of international conference of forest.  I had impression that forest occupies a great part of counrty life of France and people think it has to be managed for future generations, as the words on this stamp suggest.  Not just timbers for industry, but variety of lives and rich produce of food is still very much appreciated, picked and sold in open air markets, which are opened in every towns and cities.

森林資源の世界会議10周年を記念する切手。フランスではあちこちに森があって、それは大切な資源として手入れされています。ハイキングやピクニック、森の中のサイクリングなどのレジャーの場としても、きのこやベリー類の採れる場所、さらには川魚を元気に保つための水の供給源としての森を維持する努力。そして、各都市や街の週末のマルシェ（市場）ではその豊かな実りが、近くの農家で作られる新鮮な野菜と一緒に売り買いされているのです。食のサステナブルのお手本があります。

water a tree / 日中青年友好

In 1984, there was a discussion between China and Japan to establish this centre in order to induce cultural and economical exchange of young generations.  These stamps were issued to promote the plan.  The centre was built finally in 1991 in Beijing – so, it was a bit like watering a small plant to grow a tree.  I have not found any stamp to celebrate its completion, yet.

Following lastest three posts, which I happened to feature Japanese kimono girls, I am introducing these stamps from China.  3 March is a Girl’s Day in Japan.

着物の女性の切手が3度続いていることに気付いたので、今日は中国の切手に登場する着物の少女を紹介します。あさって3日は桃の節句だし。

1984年の中曽根総理と胡耀邦総書記との間で合意された「日中青年交流センター」の構想を受け発行された切手。センターは1991年に完成をみたので、この切手に描かれている気に水をやってゆっくり育てる、という図柄は正しかったのかもしれません。つるっと光ったプラスティックのバケツが時代を感じさせます。1984年または1991年に日本でこの「日中青年交流センター」を扱った切手が発行されていないようなのが、不思議ではあります。

wooden stamp / 木の切手

A self-adhesive stamp made of real wood.  Thin sliced Fir, about 0.7mm thickness.  It is so simple that they wanted to make a stamp in Wood, but I am not sure if they really needed this printed pattern, which is hiding natural grain.

0.7ミリの厚さのモミの木で作られた切手。よし、本物の木で切手を作ろう！とシンプルに思いついて作った、という感じですね。せっかくの木目を隠している印刷された白い木目が蛇足なような気もします。やはり切手には紙の質感が一番合っていると思うのはわたしだけでしょうか。

A family on bikes under a tree / 木の下の家族

Another stamp of tree and bicycle.  Not yet researched what this stamp is about, but illustration is done by traditional paper cut method, depicting a family cycling in wood.

木と自転車の切手をもう一枚。何を記念しているのかまだリサーチできていませんが、伝統的な切り紙の手法で木の下をサイクリングする家族が描かれています。

The International Garden and Greenery Exposition, Osaka, Japan

I have not visited this exposition, but news showed me very opposite image from this calm atmosphere.  So, I did not pay special attention of this stamp until I found a bicycle under the tree.  Nice breeze it seems, but not really nice to ride on grass, though.

国際花と緑の博覧会を記念した切手。この博覧会を実際には訪れていないのですが、この切手の印象とはとても違うイメージを持っていました。木の下に自転車を見つけるまでは気にも留めていなかった一枚。こういう牧草地のような場所は、実はとっても自転車では走りにくいのだけど、、。

In contrast to the last two stamps from 1910′s and 1930′s, this one was made in a hurry and the message was urgency.  Printed on off White coarse paper, density of mono colour creates picture.

余裕のあった大正時代や開戦直後の切手にくらべると質素で作りも粗い、戦後間もない3年目に発行された切手。焼け野原に木を植えよう、というメッセージは危急を要しているように感じられます。
