This telephone was already retro when the stamp was issued – the central image is an Ericsson DBH 1001 model, designed in 1929 by Norwegian designer Jean Heiberg.  I was reading about the development of the telephone, then found this picture in the article!

A line drawing of an earlier telephone receiver is on top and an electric circuit is framing this stamp – technical but somehow enchanting – a celebration of the great invention, which has turned into the now indispensable article.

この切手が出た時、この電話機はすでにレトロなデザインだったはず、、、と思いつつ電話機の歴史を読んでいて、この写真を見つけて嬉しくなりました。エリクソンDBH 1001型は1929年にノルウェー人の手でデザインされ、工業化が可能になった初期のプラスティック、ベークライトで作られました。

受話器の上には初期の受話器の線描があり、周囲が電気回路記号でふちどられているこの切手。まじめな図柄なのに微笑ましく感じます。この切手が出た36年前、電話が今のような「生活に欠かせない道具」となることを人々は想像していたでしょうか？

print method and motif / モチーフと印刷

When the chosen motif and printing method are matching together – the result is good.  This stamp with two colour intaglio depicts spiky needles of a Hedgehog very well, as well as the atmosphere of this animal at the bottom of hedges.

From my previous post, I think the head beam of a car by Lithography technique works well – density control of blue and yellow – but the Hedgehog is not so well depicted as this example.

選ばれたモチーフと印刷方法がマッチして素敵な結果になっている切手。凹版印刷のかりかりした線が、柔らかな輪郭を持ちながらもとげとげした針に覆われるハリネズミの姿と、生け垣の下に棲むらしいこの動物の雰囲気を良く伝えています。

一つ前のポストの切手はリトグラフで制作され、闇に光る車のヘッドライトは効果的に描かれているけれど、ハリネズミの表現はいまいちだよなぁ、、と思うのでした。

saving squirrels / 貯蓄リス

Since December I had this incident twice – I slammed on the brakes when I was almost running over a squirrel, which was tottering across the road.  They were both plump, had well-rounded bottom.  I though that was because we had a mild winter and they came out from hibernation too early – but someone told me that squirrels in London never hibernate, as they can find food all year round.

Well, maybe the squirrels don’t symbolize Savings any more – but those winter squirrels are certainly saving some fat on their body.  Better to watch out for little fluffy animals on the road, not to make them a victim of a traffic accident.

This stamp was in a booklet, which was distributed to all households in Sweden and they were valid for inland postage only, and gave a rebate on the normal cost for postcards and letters up to 100g.  This is why there is no face value.

昨年末からすでに2度、近所を運転中にリスを轢きそうになってあわててブレーキを踏む、という事がありました。暖冬だったから、春になったと思って冬眠から出て来たのかな？と思うような、よたよたとした足取りで道を横切るリス。でも、ロンドン周辺では、いつでも餌があるのでリスは冬眠しないのだそうです。

ちょっと昔の切手に登場するような「貯蓄の象徴」ではなくなっているらしいリスですが、でも、あの2匹のリスは丸まると太っていたから、秋にたくさん食べて脂肪を貯蓄する習性は変わっていないのかも。木立の近くを走る時は、気をつけないといけません。

この切手はブックレットとしてスウェーデンのすべての家庭に配られ、国内の郵便に使うか、またはその対価の払い戻しを受け取ることができたようです。額面が印刷されていないのは、それが理由なのですね。

big appetite in autumn / 食欲の秋

There is a saying in Japan that your appetite grows in autumn.  Yes, I have eaten a lot in Istanbul last week and now here in Tokyo.  My appetite will be more developed in Hiroshima in the next week, then I will start to miss my everyday meal in London.

This is the third radish stamp in my collection.  In Europe, now is the time to make preserved food, the grace of forest.

食欲の秋、というのは本当だなぁと思います。どうしてこんなにお腹が空く？と不思議になるほどです。仕事をしていたらお腹が空いて当然だけど、なんにもしていない移動待ちの半日とか、そんな生産的でない夕方にもぺこぺこにお腹が空くのはちょっと理不尽な気がする。

赤カブを描いた切手がもう一枚ありました。スウェーデンの秋の味覚と保存食作りの切手。ヨーロッパでは秋の味覚は大事に保存され冬を越す食料になります。

camping in the rain / 雨天キャンプ

I am kind of traumatised by my first experience in camping – heavy rain was too loud to sleep, my brand new trainers went totally brown in muddy ground next morning.  It was the last camping memory and I have not gone back to the fields to sleep since.

In recent years it seems I am wanting to go back – I bought a set of stackable wine glasses, enamel mugs and a kettle and even a collapsible coffee dripper.  I cannot resist compactness and devices for mobility.  Well, I have to buy a tent, then.

子供の頃に行ったキャンプで雨に降られ散々な目にあいました。テントを打つ雨音が強くて眠れず、翌朝に新品のスニーカーを泥にとられて靴下までどろどろになった記憶。たぶんこれが理由で、それ以来2度とキャンプをしていないのでした。

ここ数年、どうやらキャンプをしたくなっているようで、気づくといろいろ揃えていました。重ねて小さく収納できるワイングラス、ホーローのやかんとマグカップ、平たくなるコーヒー・ドリッパーまで。こういう機能的でコンパクトに設計されたアイテムに目がないのでした。そうだ、まずテントを買わないと、、。

the power of the spiral / うずまきの力

One of the features which catches my eye when I see ironwork is the spiral.  There is some kind of power there, especially when they exist in numbers.  A lot of spirals – somehow makes me stare at them and be hypnotised.

This series of stamps, definitives from Sweden, are simple and powerful examples to reproduce the power of the spiral.

中世の鉄細工を見てわくわくする要素のひとつが、うずまきの繰り返しです。どうしてこんなに引きつけられ、くらくらさせられるのか。やはり前世の記憶が、、、？

このスウェーデンの普通切手は、鉄細工のシンプルな魅力がそのまま切手になっていて、うっとりしてしまうのでした。

I strongly believe that in a former life I was a Medieval blacksmith somewhere in Europe!

My favorite room in the Victoria &Albert Museum is the Ironwork gallery on level 3 and my favorite museum in France is Musée Le Secq des Tournelles in Rouen.  Both places are full of objects made of iron – decorative wrought and cast iron, such as door handles, locks and keys, handrails and shop signs, doors and fences.  I can forget about time, staring at them and imagining iron bars being forged, twisted and formed into spirals.  I can even smell charcoal and feel the heat of sparks flying…

わたしの前世は（もしもいくつかあるなら、確実にその一つは）中世ヨーロッパの鍛冶屋だったと確信しています。

ロンドンの工芸美術博物館V&Aで一番お気に入りの部屋はレベル3にある Ironwork ギャラリー。フランスで一番好きな博物館はル・セック・ド・トーネルという人のコレクションを納めたルーオンにある教会です。どちらも、鋳鉄や聯鉄で作られた門扉、ドアハンドル、錠前と鍵、階段の手すりや看板などで一杯で、入ったとたんに腰くだけのようになって時間を忘れ、ほれぼれと眺め入ってしまう。自分でも、どうしてこんなに好きなのか謎なので、これはやはり前世だと思うのです。

The snow has stayed for a week on country roads and I couldn’t take the risk of riding on frozen surfaces.  It was raining all day today, so maybe tomorrow we have the chance to ride?

The detail in this stamp is great, as enlarged below.  Slania has proven that single coloured stamps can be very enjoyable.

積もった雪が道路をかちかちに凍らせてから一週間ほど経ちます。ぜったいに転ぶと思って自転車に乗ってないのだけど、かなり限界。風を切って走りたい！今日は一日中雨だったので、雪も溶けたはず。明日には出かけてみます。

このスラニアが彫った凹版印刷のディテールは素晴らしいです。単色でもここまで描き込める、という挑戦のような切手。

Happy Easter! / スイセンの群生

Domestic first class stamp, one of a set of two ( another one was Cockerel ) celebrating Easter.  All of sudden, Daffodiles are emerged and blooming over green fields, here in London.  I did not know, but Daffodike or Narcissus are toxic if you eat them.  Be careful and have a Happy Easter!

イースターを飾る春の象徴「スイセン」の切手をスゥエーデンから。イギリスでもようやく冬が去ろうとしていて、日当りのよい草地に突然伸びてきて花をさかせているスイセンをあちこちで見ます。植えられているのか、自生しているのか？今まで知らなかったのだけど、スイセンって毒があるんですね。ニラと間違えて食べないように。

I thought ‘three hearts’ could have been issued for St. Valentine’s Day – although it wasn’t, still makes me happy.  Three four-leaved clovers as well.  They are engraved by Czeslaw Slania, very crisp and worth looking into them with magnifier.

このチャーミングなハートの切手はバレンタイン・デーを記念しているのかな？と思ったけれど、そうではなかったみたい。きりりとエッジの効いたこの図柄は、彫り師スラニアの手によるものでした。虫メガネで覗くとさらに嬉しくなります。

map and compass point / 地図と方位記号

I like maps.  People say women cannot read maps – that is not true.  I am a good navigator and sometime better than TomTom.

Maps are used a lot for subject of stamps, as it shows a territory of a country and also movement of people.  I like this stamp, particularly the compass point is nicely featured.  The map featured is the first Swedish Nautical Chart, made in 1644.

地図が好きです。よく女性は地図が読めないとか言いますが、真実ではありません。地図を読むのも大好きで、カーナビよりもよい判断をすることだってあります。

切手のモチーフとしてよく地図が使われるのは、国の形が絵になりやすかったり、人や物の動きや歴史的な時間が描けるからでしょうか。1644年に作成されたスェーデンで最初の海図を図案化したこの切手は、古風な方位記号がデザインに組み込まれていて小さいながらも美しい仕上がりです。

地図の切手が好きな方には『切手が伝える地図の世界史』の著者が運営していると思われる「切手で読む地図の楽しみ」というブログが圧巻です。素晴らしい。

Delicately drawn houses from Sweden – wooden structure, often wooden cladded, lawn covered roof sometime, clean illustrations make me imagine cozy lives in them.

北の国の民家だな、という感じがします。木をそのまま見せた木造、屋根に芝が載っていたりする。煙突の下には大きな暖炉があって。清潔で居心地の良さそうな生活が営まれている、そんな想像をかきたてるイラストに惹かれます。
