A squirrel, a bird on a nest and an owl – they are representing modest and wise home management, such as saving money at the Post Office Savings Bank.

This squirrel looks like a Red Squirrel, the native kind before the Grey Squirrel came to dominate most of Britain.  They occasionally take a long sleep when the weather is very cold, but normally not going into hibernation for long.  This picture I like – is a Grey Squirrel having a siesta..

「ちょっと昔の」貯蓄の象徴として描かれているリス。美しい巣を作る小鳥や森の賢者と言われるふくろうと一緒に、堅実に将来に備える郵便貯金の100年記念の切手に登場しています。

このオレンジ色はキタリスの色のようです。最近は見かけないのは、アメリカから持ち込まれたハイイロリスが繁殖してキタリスをスコットランドまで追いやってしまったからなのだそうです。どちらも長い冬眠はしないけれど、とても寒いときには巣の中から数日出て来ない、と説明されています。この写真のリスは、暑い夏に枝の上で昼寝をしている姿で、冬眠ではなさそうです。

このテーマと図柄に、宝石をちりばめた王冠とネックレスの女王はいかにも不釣り合い、、、女王の肖像がだんだんと小さくなってついにはシルエットに変わるのは、この切手の5年後のことです。

wisdom and owl / 知恵のふくろう

I was in Basel last weekend and found that blacksmith’s were very important to complete European townscapes, together with architects and builders.  Door handles, letter boxes, balconies and shop signs hang over the entrances, were hand made and express a love for their houses.

In this stamp, the owl is symbolising a succession of knowledge through generations – from fathers to their sons.  Now, daughters are joining them proudly and taking the T-shaped ruler and hammer in their hands!

バーゼルの旧市街を歩いていて、家のドアハンドルや呼び鈴、郵便受け口やちょうつがいなどのディテールが目に留まりました。鍛冶屋に発注してひとつひとつ手作りされた金物からは、家への愛情を感じます。中世ヨーロッパでは、鍛冶屋は建築家や大工と一緒になって、街の表情を作ったのですね。

この切手ではふくろうが、受け継がれた職人の知恵を象徴しているようです。父から息子に受け継がれた職能は、今では娘たちにも開かれたのでした。T定規とかなづちを手に、肩には知恵のふくろうをのせて。

Northern Owls / 北国のふくろう

The previous two stamps are from a set, completed by these three.  They are all on one sheet, as shown below.  Bubo bubo, known as the Eurasian Eagle-owl, is a large owl, with a wingspan of up to 2 metres.  The smaller one beside it, Tengmalm’s Owl, is similar in appearance to the Tawny Owl, which is hooting near by our house these days, but has a golden ring in its eyes.

上の写真はこのポストのトップから3枚の切手と前回、前々回のポストの切手をあわせたシートです。一番大きく描かれているワシミミズクは大きいフクロウで、翼を広げると2メートルになるものあるそうです。その翼の下の小さめのフクロウはキンメフクロウで、見かけは近くの森で啼いているモリフクロウに似ていますが、目に金色の輪があることが特徴です。

Great Grey Owl / カラフトフクロウ

Maybe the owl I saw last summer in France was this Great Grey Owl, as I saw a kind of white face?  But this type of owl lives in Northern areas and is very large – it is also threatened in numbers.  In fact, what I saw was the more common Barn Owl – and its face is featured in this stamp.

去年の夏に見たフクロウはこれだったかな？と白っぽい顔のところを見て思ったけど、これも違いました。カラフトフクロウはもっと北に住んでいるし巨大で、最近は数が減っている種類のようです。わたしが見たのはメンフクロウでした。この切手になっているのがそれで、白いお面を付けているような顔です。

去年の夏、念願かなってはじめてフクロウを見たのです。かなり暗くなった空を背景に、農家の屋根から木立に向かって飛び立ったフクロウはうすいグレーだったと思ったのだけど、、、学名から調べたこのシロフクロウは違うみたい。ずっと北にしか住んでいないのでした。

The Enchanted Owl / 魔法のふくろう

Since last autumn I have not heard the sound of an Owl at all, until tonight.  I am really pleased to hear it!

This beautiful Owl stamp is based on an Inuit artist’s work from 1960, named ‘The Enchanted Owl’.  How magical the Owl was in their tradition – I would like to find out.  In Canada, the indigenous people’s full political rights were entitled in 1960 – two years earlier than the Australian Aborigine – just 51 years ago.  That is a suprise.

昨年秋ぐらいから、まったくふくろうの鳴き声を聞かず、どうしたんだろう？と話していた今夜、久しぶりにはっきりした声を聞きました。あぁ、よかった。戻ってきた。

この美しい切手にはカナダの原住民イヌイットのアーティストの『魔法のふくろう』という名の石版画が使われています。この切手を見て、ふくろうがイヌイットや他の原住民にとってどんな意味を持った鳥だったのか、知りたいと思いました。カナダでは、この石版画が制作された1960年にやっと、原住民の参政権が認められています。オーストラリアのアボリジニよりは2年早かったとはいえ、今からたった51年前のことだと思うと、ちょっと驚きです。

Owls keep hooting last few days.  Sound of them are really nice and relaxing.  This illustration suites the atmosphere of the sound well – the first one has sleepy eyes and in the second stamp, face of line drawn owl is certainly hooting hohho-.

特に冷えているここ数日、フクロウがよく鳴いています。ゆったりした気分になれる素敵な音です。この切手のイラストと雰囲気は鳴き声ととてもしっくりきます。特に、一枚目のフクロウの甘い目と、二枚目の背後の白黒で描かれているフクロウの口。わたしには今まさに「ホッホー」と鳴いているように見えます。

ここに描かれているのはモリフクロウとワシミミズクですが、モリフクロウは日本にはいない種類で、北海道の北部にのみ居るワシミミズクは数が少なく絶滅危惧に指定されているようです。世界的にみるとまだ大丈夫みたい。イギリスにはいないようですが、もともといなかったのかな？

Animals in the Arctic Circle

This morning we had powdery snow flakes on trees, front garden and pavement – and blue sky above all.  Shiny sun was up, drew a low arch, and even at sunset the light was clear.  Beautiful winter day.  I wish you all a Happy New Year 2010!

I heard an owl hoot right now, what a nice coincidence!  I was thinking of owls in wood, uploading this post.  Also, I think these stamps represent feeling of new year’s day, as animals are waiting for spring as we do.

This year in Chinese Zodiac is Tiger.  I only have one stamp of a tiger, from Korea, which I featured already.

新年あけましておめでとうございます。今朝起きると木々も道路も白い雪で覆われ、青空が広がっていました。透き通った空気と陽の低い静かな午後、そして夕暮れ時になっても光がきらきらした冬の日でした。

雪の中で春を待つ動物達、例えばフクロウ、、、と思ってこの切手をアップしていたちょうど今、裏の森でフクロウが鳴きました。素敵な偶然に嬉しくなります。

今年は寅年ですが、手元にあってここに載せたいほど好きな虎の切手はたったの一枚、韓国の切手で、すでにアップしていました。

2009年3月28日に開催された「アース・アワー」を宣伝する切手。上はフクロウで、下はたぶんクモザルだと思うのだけど、、違うかな？すっきりしつつチャーミングな絵柄でメッセージがまっすぐ伝わります。

Animal Welfare

I think this is promoting animal welfare, but not really sure.  Illustrated Owl is lovely.

動物愛護を謳っているのだと思われますが、、、未確認。抽象化されたフクロウがとってもかわいい。

Issued for centenary of death of Edward Lear, who was an English artist, illustrator, author, and poet.  Illustration of the top stamp is from “Nonsense Books Songs and Stories” (1871), titled “The Owl and the Pussycat”. Owls and cats are repeatedly used in his illustration.  A lots of pages of his Nonesense books are seen in this web site.

ナンセンス詩人として知られるエドワード・リアの没後100年を記念して発行された切手。フクロウと猫は彼の作品の中で繰り返し使われているモチーフです。一枚目の切手は“The Owl and the Pussycat”という題の詩にそえられたイラストが使われています。このサイトではたくさんのイラストが紹介されています。

One of many Millennium stamps, which features George the barn owl from World Owl Trust, a part of Muncaster Castle.

イギリスのカンブリア州にある幽霊で有名なマンカスター城にある世界フクロウ保存委員会が題材になったミレニアム切手の一枚。つぶらな瞳を持つフクロウはこのセンターに飼われている「ジョージ」なのだそうです。
