Charity for East Japan Earthquake Disaster

It has been a year since the Tohoku Earthquake happened on 11 March 2011.  There are still a lot of people living in temporary housing, and the debris of towns and cities washed away by the Tsunami are still piled beside the roads in many areas. The nuclear power station is still in the cooling down stage before sealing it off.

This set of stamps were issued to raise emergency support for the struck area, prepared within three months after the earthquake – I guess that was very quick compared to the normal process of issuing stamps.  The design is the reflection of the wish of many Japanese at that time – willing to deliver a message that we are thinking of people who lost their loved ones and their homes.

There was a charity concert in London last Sunday 11 March, to raise continuous support for Tsunami orphans.  Music has a strong power to share, and unites this supportive wish.  I was moved by slides which showed people around the world giving their encouragement to Japan after the tragedy.

震災からはやくも一年。あの頃は「デザイナーはこんな時に、どんな役に立てるのか？？」と毎日考え込んだけれど、そんな思いも日々の忙しさにかき消されていた、そのことを考えたここ数日でした。まだまだ復興の道のりは長く、福島の逼迫した事態に触れた天皇陛下のお言葉がニュースでは編集され、原発反対の人間の輪は警察に阻まれる現実。遠くから見て、やるせない気持ちになった週末でした。

この切手は震災から3か月で発行され、被害者の救援への寄付金を募りました。デザインが抽象的すぎるのでは？震災と津波で失われた美しい風景や被災各県に伝わる伝統文化などを題材にしては？という意見も読みました。たしかに、そういうリサーチに時間をかけてじっくり作られた切手は今後、被災地へのサポートが忘れられそうな頃に必要になってくると思いますが、今回はスピードが肝心だったので、まずは暖かい気持ちにさせてくれる切手に拍手を送りたいと思います。

追記：切手の博物館で開催された『愛の切手展』でこの切手が紹介されたようです。東京の友人が、デザイナーのコメントが載っているリンクを送ってくれました。「一枚でも多く売れてほしい」という願い。なるほど。

‘Explorers on the Moon‘ by Hergé, 1954

I like this interior colour – Hergé must have been influenced by his contemporary designers, such as Jean Prouvé.  Design details for light weight structures and round corners of drawers, dots on the floor… they all are reflecting the atmosphere of that time.

Why do I categorise this in ‘kawaii/cute’? – the back view of Snowy… his skinny neck is so cute!

『月世界探検』に出てくる宇宙船のインテリアの色合いが好きです。作者のエルジェは、間違いなくジャン・プルーヴェなどの同世代を生きたデザイナー達の仕事に影響を受けていたと思います。軽量化のための穴、角の丸い引き出し、床の丸い模様など、どれも時代の空気を感じさせてくれます。

そして、スノーウィーのほっそりした首の後ろ姿がかわいいので「kawaii」カテゴリーに。

run to a cinema? / タンタン3D？

Yesterday and today are the world premiere of ‘The Adventure of Tintin – 3D‘ – the movie is shown in the cinema from tomorrow.  I watched YouTube clip of the trailer, also the channel 4 feature… well, rushing to a cinema?  Ummm… I realised that I am a fan of those distinctive black line drawings and well-chosen colour compositions.  I am not sure if I am keen to watch the 3D.  Is it a too conservative opinion?  Should it be good because it is directed by Steven Spielberg?

昨日と今日がワールド・プレミアで、明日から公開される『The Adventure of Tintin – 3D』。さて、映画館に走るべきなのか？トレイラーとチャンネル4のニュースまで観たけれど、スティーブン・スピルバーグがタンタンを「ティンティン」と発音するのにいちいちひっかかって困りました。タンタンだもん！そして気付いたのです。わたしはあの黒い線描とマットな着色が大好き！ということに。3Dなぁ、、、こんな困惑は保守的すぎますか？

butterfly, radish and sun / 大陽はどこに

When I was in the countryside for cycling last weekend, I saw a couple of yellow butterflies.  I had an idea that butterflies are found from spring to early summer and not after the peak of a hot summer.  It seems we haven’t had the peak of summer yet – and I am seeing some trees getting coloured already…

But in our garden, the branches of our pear tree are heavily laden with the biggest pears of the last few years.  How about the vegetable harvest?

I like the composition of these stamp designs – wide sky for the butterfly and deep ground for the radish, as well as the sun with big hands.

先週末、郊外をサイクリング中に蝶がひらひら飛んでいるのを何度か見かけました。あれ、蝶は春先から初夏にかけて飛んで、お盆を過ぎたらぱったり見ないもののはずでは？というか、ここイギリスではこの夏、ほとんど暑くならないままに木々が色づき始めているのでした。

大陽はどこに？
夏は終わったの？

そんな天候なのに、庭の梨の木が今まで見た事のない大きさでたわわに実って、枝が重みで垂れ下がっています。土の中の野菜類は順調に育っているのかな？

地面の位置の違いで蝶に広い空、カブには深い大地を作っている、この女性イラストレーターのおおらかな構図が大好きです。手を振っているような大陽も甘すぎず、クール。

The first set of stamps illustrated by Dick Bruna, one of seasonal ‘Kinderzegels’ series.  He was 42 years old and his favorite colours were the same as fourty years later!

ディック・ブルーナが初めて手がけた1969年の切手です。毎年数回発行された『子供切手』のシリーズに彼がこのイラストを寄せたのは42歳の時。41年経った今も作風や好みの色がほとんど変わっていないのは新鮮な驚きですね。

Miffy is touring / ミッフィー展、巡回

The exhibition of Go Go Miffy is touring several venues in Japan.  So, I will have a chance to see it in the future!

It is odd not to show stamps inside the ‘sorroundings’ – here you are.  The hiding Miffies come out to dance, write and sit.  The whole sheet was below ( not anymore in the condition… ).

前回のポストで紹介した『ゴーゴーミッフィー展』は全国を巡回します。これなら、どこかでちゃんと見れそうです。

そして「フチ」を紹介して切手じたいを載せないのは変よね、やっぱり、と思い、中の切手も紹介します。きっと、上記展示会に原画がありますね。楽しみ。シートから切り取る前はこんなひと続きでした（下）。

Go Go Miffy / ゴーゴーミッフィー展

They are not stamps, but illustrated sorrundings of Miffy stamps of Netherland.  Miffy is a rabbit character of children’s books from 1950′s, which are still continued.  There is an exhibition in Tokyo named ‘Go Go Miffy‘, showing original drawings and artworks for printing – and tomorrow is the last day of this exhibition.  I am big fan of stamps designed by Dick Bruna and so pity not to see this exhibition…

松屋銀座で開催中の『ゴーゴーミッフィー展』が明日5月10日まで、というのを今日になって知りました。これを見れるように帰国の予定を立てるんだった、、、残念。そこで、この展示会HPで使われているイラストが、切手ではないのだけれど「フチ」に印刷された絵だったので、それをここでアップします。ミッフィーのファンのクリエーターから55歳の誕生日に寄せられたプレゼント、というのも見たかったなぁ。ブルーナの切手にはホントに毎回きゅーん！となり、きっといつかユトレヒトのブルーナ美術館にも行くと思うのです。

One of the stamps issued Japanese songs popular in musical educations.  The illustrator was a commercial animator before becoming an illustrator.  His lines and colours are very much suitable for stamp format and on the matured end of ‘kawaii’ kind, for me.

瀧廉太郎の『花』の出だしを載せた「日本の歌シリーズ」の9集（上）と『浜辺の歌』の7集（下）から。林静一氏のイラストは、その軽やかな線と明るい色使いがとても切手に合っていると思います。構成はオトナっぽいけれど、少女の表情から「かわいい」範疇にぎりぎり入るかな。

On a marché sur la Lune / 月世界探検

I think this is from ‘Explorers on the Moon’, one of the series of ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ by the great comic writer and artist.  I ofetn think about Cuteness or simply what appeal to me – this case, it is clearly Snowy, the dog… in a space suit with tail location.

『タンタンの冒険旅行』の中の一作『月世界探検』からの2コマと思われます。何かを見て「かわいい！」と反応してしまう要素って何だろう？と考えることがあるのですが、この場合は間違いなくタンタンのお供スノーウィーの、、、「しっぽまで曲がるように出来ている宇宙飛行士の服」ですね。

Pingu post / ピングー郵便

Yellow horn on their hats.  I did not know until I googled about Pingu, that was fist made in Switzerland and shown on TV from 1986.  I had though they were Scandinavian, but from South Pole!  Their UK website is this.  So, this is again, one of Swiss national pride – although animation was directed by German and voice was roled by Italian.

この切手をここに載せるためにグーグル検索するまで、ピングーは北欧のアニメだと思っていました。スイス製の、南極のペンギンだったとは。というか、今のいままでペンギンは南半球にしかいない、という事実を知らなかった、、、。ピングーの日本のオフィシャルHPはこれです。実はドイツ人がディレクションをしてイタリア人が声の出演をしてるようですが、それでもスイスの国民的キャラクターだったのですね。

Moomin / ムーミン

Stories of Moomin valley is very popular in Japan, but I recognise that it is not well known in the UK.  Finish post has issued several set of stamps on this children books, which were fist published in 1954.

In this set of stamps from 2007, Moominmama is cooking outdoor.  Also they tell us that Finland is a contry of water.

ムーミンは日本では誰もが知っているけれど、英国ではあまり知られていません。フィンランドではムーミンに題材をとった切手がたくさん発行されています。

このシリーズではムーミンママが湖畔のたき火で料理をしています。トンボや咲き乱れる花が晩夏を思わせる色合いで、フィンランドが水の国であることを教えてくれます。

Cow or bull?  Ayway, I found a lot of nice posters of this artist, then recoginised that I saw his works many times in French pulications.  This blog Books by its Cover is nice finding in the search of his name.

2005年に大阪のサントリー美術館で回顧展があったレイモン・サヴィニャック。亡くなった翌年にイラストが切手になっていたのですね。すごくかわいいエール・フランスのブルボン・キーホルダーも彼のデザインでした。

Animal Welfare

I think this is promoting animal welfare, but not really sure.  Illustrated Owl is lovely.

動物愛護を謳っているのだと思われますが、、、未確認。抽象化されたフクロウがとってもかわいい。

Catalogue title ‘Kinderzegels’ was translated ‘Baby Seals’ on Dictionary.com, but I guess these Semi-Postal stamps feature children stories and songs.  The light blue one says ‘Aunt Nans was on a goose’, maybe.
