Centenary of Admission to Universal Postal Union

I found another stamp with birds, carrying messages.  The rectangular shape in the middle is a post box – I noticed that Red post boxes are not universal.  This map shows the different colours of post boxes around the world – but for me, having lived in Japan and now living in the UK, post boxes have always been red!

The design of this stamp looks nicely dated and the shape of this post box is evocative of that time, in a similar way that I remember ‘Mr. Number’ of these stamps at the edge of my memory.

万国郵便連合加盟100年記念の切手。ポストの周りを舞う鳥がピンクの封筒をくわえている、しんみりとレトロな図柄。35年前の切手と思うとうなずけますね。以前に載せた「ナンバー君」切手にも出てくるこのポストは、この頃から登場したようです。

中央にあるのがポストなのは日本人なら誰でも分かるし、きっとイギリス人にも分かると思うけれど、実は世界のポストはこんなにいろいろな色で設置されているのですね。フランスとフィンランドの黄色ぐらいしか憶えていないのだけれど。

‘Black Cat’ (1910) by Shunso Hishida (1874-1911)

The cat is sitting on an Oak tree – we are more familiar with straight Oak trees, but sometimes it is bendy and provides a good place for a cat.

The painter Shunso Hishida started to bring innovative techniques into traditional Japanese painting around 1900.  He traveled to India, America and Europe between 1903-05, after which he even tried pointillism – but the Japanese painting authorities did not accept him at that time.  It is a pity that he died young and did not try to stir up the artistic circles further.

オークは木材用のものはまっすぐですが、こんなに曲がった育ち方をすることもあるのですね。

原画は明治時代の夭折の画家、菱田春草の『黒き猫』という作品です。1900年頃から輪郭線を使わない画法を試していたこの画家は、岡倉天心と一緒にアメリカとヨーロッパを旅し、帰国後には点描で日本画を描くことを試したようです。「ジャポニズムの影響を受けて始まった」とされる印象派の作品に触れ、その革新に刺激されたのだろうか？と推測するのも面白いです。

Animal wrestling on ‘Choju-jinbutsu-giga‘

‘Choju-jinbutsu-giga’ means ‘Animal-person Caricatures’, drawn by unknown artists at a temple in Kyoto, between the 12th and 13th century.  This set of scrolls are regarded as the first Japanese manga.

In this scene, a rabbit is thrown by a frog in sumo wrestling, and not just the frog audience, but also the defeated rabbit are laughing.  I remembered this stamp when I slipped and fell on my bottom on the stairs of a friend’s house a few days ago.

お正月の3日に友人宅の階段ですべって尻もちをつき、まぶたに火花が飛び散りました。その時に思い出したのがこの切手。

『鳥獣人物戯画』の一場面のうさぎの表情が大好きです。こんな風に、すってん転んでもわははと笑っていられるような、そんな一年になったらいいな、と、、。

shrimp, prawn or lobster? / エビ問題

When this stamp was issued, we were not aware of the impact of the commercial fishing on the ocean environment.  Recent researches are revealing the scale of destruction and I was shocked to watch ‘The Death of the Oceans?’ presented by David Attenborough.

This is the Japanese spiny lobster and they seem ethically OK.  But smaller ones, prawns or shrimps are more problematic.  Shrimp trawling causes a lot of bycatch.  According to Greenpeace Seafood Red List, there are 10 kgs of bycatch for 1 kg of shrimp, and endangered species, such as sea turtles, are often caught.  Prawns and shrimps are largely exported to Japan, USA and Western Europe.

Do we keep enojoying Dim Sum at a reasonable price in traditional Chinese restaurant or look for a MSC certified restaurant and pay a bit more? – Although I am used to choose vegetables and meat ethically, this is not an easy question to ask myself.

この切手が発行された時にはまだ、漁業が環境に与えている影響についてほとんど議論されていなかったと思います。最近、デーヴィッド・アッテンボローのBBCのドキュメンタリー『The Death of the Oceans?』を観てショックを受けました。人口の増加と漁業技術の進歩、寿司が世界中で好まれるようになったこと、、、原因はたくさんあるけれど、ともかくこのまま続けると海の生態系はずたずたになってしまう。

この切手に描かれているイセエビは、たまにしか口にしないけれど、さほど問題ではないようです。もう少し小さめのエビ、アジアの海で底網で収穫されるタイプが環境に深刻な影響を与えています。1キロのエビを穫るために他の生き物が10キロもトロール網にかかってしまうのだそうです。その網には、絶滅の危機にある海ガメもかかってしまう。そして、エビは遠く日本やアメリカ、ヨーロッパなどの消費地に輸出されます。

今までのように中華街で安く美味しい飲茶を食べ続けるか、それともMSCに認定された別のレストランで（ある？）少し高い料金を払うか？卵や肉、野菜などをサステナブルな売り手から買うことには慣れてきたけれど、エビ問題にはちょっと困っているのでした。

I was grown up in Yamaguchi prefecture, which is known for Fugu fishing.  I remember once my grandfather caught this funny looking but poisonous fish and my mother took it to a fishmonger who had a license to prepare it for sashimi.

Amberjack is a special delicacy for me as it fished far away from where I used to live.  And I was wrong to remember about squid as a winter taste – this Flying Squid, the most common squid is summer/autumn food.

Recently I am more concerend about what I eat – not just the safety of it, but also the impact of commercial fishing on the environment.  Then I started to look up names and the recent statistics.  This list is helpful for getting some idea, from their names.

山口県で育ったのでフグは身近な魚でした。祖父が近くで釣って帰って、母が免許を持った魚屋に持ち込んでさばいてもらったのを憶えています。ブリは遠く日本海側で釣れる魚だから、家族にとってはお正月用の特別な魚でした。イカも冬の味だと思い込んでいたのですが、スルメイカは夏が旬なのですね。

近頃、日常的に食べるものがどんな風に育ったり捕獲されたりしているのか、魚好きのわたしたちによる消費が環境にどんな影響を与えているのか気になりはじめました。けれど、魚についてあまりに何も知らないので、この一覧表の助けをかりて魚の名前と姿を見比べることから始めようと思います。

‘Kitchen Beauties’ by Utamaro ( 1753? – 1806 )

This kitchen might be located in a house or outside – so, I sort it in ‘food and cooking’ category.  The original woodblock print is in the collection of Tokyo National Museum, as well as Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

This stamp is well representing details – coiled handles on boiling pot, delicate patterns on Kimono, smoke comes out from the cooker and a lot more.  It is great pleasure to inspect it with a magnifier.

喜多川歌麿の『台所美人』は、虫メガネでじっくり観察すると本当に楽しい一枚です。着物の柄、しなやかな手に握られた包丁と丸ナス、釜の持ち手についたコイル状の針金、炉から吹き出る煙。小さな切手にこのディテールを再現したデザイナーと印刷職人の心意気に拍手をおくります。

元になった木版画は東京国立博物館とボストン美術館に収蔵されています。

The first set of stamps illustrated by Dick Bruna, one of seasonal ‘Kinderzegels’ series.  He was 42 years old and his favorite colours were the same as fourty years later!

ディック・ブルーナが初めて手がけた1969年の切手です。毎年数回発行された『子供切手』のシリーズに彼がこのイラストを寄せたのは42歳の時。41年経った今も作風や好みの色がほとんど変わっていないのは新鮮な驚きですね。

I have returned from Milano furniture fair last weekend, took 25 hours in total, through night train and Euro tunnel train in a car.  I had new pieces launched in a few places, but I am not sure if these commercial activities are going into the right direction altogether, or not.  I think, we, design industry, are in between realistic momentum and nostalgia for the bubbly time. Italian furniture industry has an unique problem as well – in Guardian.co.uk article, Justin McGuirk is describing a kind of situation there – ‘no one under the age of 60 gets a look-in’.

ミラノでの家具見本市の2日目にアイスランドで火山が噴火し、飛行機が飛ばなくなったので、夜行列車とユーロトンネルを抜ける車で25時間かけて帰宅しました。今年は2社から新作が出たのですが、正直、デザイン業界が全体として向かっている方向がこれでいいのか、考えこんでしまいます。真摯に向きあうべき資源や環境の現実と、デザインバブルに浮き足立った過去への郷愁の間で、どう進むべきなのか探しあぐねている感じ。

イタリア家具界には、別の問題も存在し、、。ガーディアンの記者が「巨匠の作品の展示は楽しんだけど、イタリアでは60歳以下では見向きもされない現実って？」とサローネの記事をしめくくっていたのが印象的でした。まぁ、正確には60才以下で活躍してる人もたくさんいますが、この6枚の切手からも伺えるように、たしかにイタリアは巨匠の宝庫です。1枚に4人入れたけれどこのセットだけではカバーしきれず、翌年にもう6枚のセットが出ているのですが、そちらは切手としてのデザインがさらにダサくなったので、ここに載せるのをためらっています。

Japanese songs / 林静一の少女の横顔

One of the stamps issued Japanese songs popular in musical educations.  The illustrator was a commercial animator before becoming an illustrator.  His lines and colours are very much suitable for stamp format and on the matured end of ‘kawaii’ kind, for me.

瀧廉太郎の『花』の出だしを載せた「日本の歌シリーズ」の9集（上）と『浜辺の歌』の7集（下）から。林静一氏のイラストは、その軽やかな線と明るい色使いがとても切手に合っていると思います。構成はオトナっぽいけれど、少女の表情から「かわいい」範疇にぎりぎり入るかな。

‘Winter in Northern Area’ and ‘Towards morning light’ by Yumeji Takehisa

Two more female portraits, painted both in 1921, by Yumeji Takehisa, an early Japanese commercial illustrator and book designer.

Somehow – maybe it is because the Japanese traditional paintings or wood prints are suitable for being transformed to stamp format – there are a lots of Japanese stamps issued under this category ‘beautiful ladies’.  Almost always portraits are made of anonymous female models, posed in front of artists.  This is not a category I am collecting stamps, but some of them are quite suitable for stamps.  They were my mother’s favorite stamps and as I put on ‘about this blog‘ post, I received a few letters with those stamps on.

竹久夢二の絵画が題材になった切手をもう2枚。ともに1921年の『北方の冬』と『朝の光へ』。

たぶん、日本画や木版画の浮世絵などが切手のサイズに縮小しておさまりが良いのでしょう、日本ではかなりの頻度で「美人画」が切手の図案として採用されていますが、他国にあまり例がありません。海外のコレクターに受けが良い、という理由かもしれません。収集テーマではないけれど、すんなりと綺麗だなぁと思える日本の切手です。この2枚は母のお気に入りでもあったので、この切手の貼られた手紙をわたしは何度か受け取りました。「このブログについて」にも消印付きを載せています。

‘Kurofune-ya’ painting by Yumeji Takehisa (1884-1934)

The artist Yumeji Takehisa was an early example of commercial illustratior and graphic designer, as well as a poet.  He was one of first artists who went abroad, tried to open a school for illustration and design.

This was painted on rolled silk on paper as ‘hanging’, around 1919.  The title of this painting ‘Black Ship Inn’ came from the wodden box the model is sitting on – a sign of an inn named after a large ship from America, led by Matthew C. Perry.  This ship, first arrived to Japan in 1853,  was the direct force for Edo Shogun to open the counrty.  Later, the image of Black Ship was turned positive, as symbol of Westernising and industrial development.

竹久夢二の代表作といわれる『黒船屋』。黒船の到来で揺れ動いた幕末からほぼ50年経った大正時代、この絵が描かれた1919年ごろには『黒船』はすでに西欧化、文明開化のシンボルだったのでは、と想像します。着物姿だけれどモダンな印象の女性と、巨大な黒猫。これが時代の空気だったのでしょう。挿絵や本の装丁を多く手がけグラフィック・デザイナーの先駆けとなったこの作家の掛け軸の作品が、そのまま切手としてすんなり見えるのも、なんとなく頷けます。

The bird lived Southern islands, was certified as Natural monument in 1970.  Now it becames one of vulnerable species.  I wonder if that is the case for other animal and insect featured in the same series?  No voice file is found of this bird – no picture in Wikipedia.  I should send this stamp picture, as this is beautifully illustrated.

もう一枚、丁寧に作られた日本の小鳥の切手があったことを思い出しました。絶滅危惧種のアカヒゲでした。おもに南西諸島に棲み、大隅半島に渡って繁殖するのだそうです。1970年に国の天然記念物に指定され、その後も数が減り続け。「ハブ退治を目的として各島に導入されたマングースが食べている」んだって。そういう「導入の失敗」ってあちこちで起こってるんですね。この「自然保護」シリーズで70年代に取り上げられた鳥や動物は、今では絶滅危惧種が多いのかな。調べてみようと思います。精緻な足元を拡大します。

I thought ‘three hearts’ could have been issued for St. Valentine’s Day – although it wasn’t, still makes me happy.  Three four-leaved clovers as well.  They are engraved by Czeslaw Slania, very crisp and worth looking into them with magnifier.

このチャーミングなハートの切手はバレンタイン・デーを記念しているのかな？と思ったけれど、そうではなかったみたい。きりりとエッジの効いたこの図柄は、彫り師スラニアの手によるものでした。虫メガネで覗くとさらに嬉しくなります。

My best favorite British stamps of this year, 2009 – Design Classics.  Simple and straight forward – with White background and often a face view.  Nostallgic – as Creative Review blog describes, and still are familiar landscape of London. Minis are everywhere, each school has 100 Polypropylene chairs and no. 9 Routemaster is still taking us to Royal Albert Hall.

2009年も終わりに近づいていますが、今年一番のお気に入りをまだ紹介していないことに気づきました。10枚一度に発行されメディアでも話題になった英国デザイン・クラシック。「ノスタルジック」とも言われていますが、これらは今でもロンドンの日常に存在するデザインです。ミニはまだ走っているし、ロビン・ディの椅子はどの学校でも使われ、地下鉄地図もこのまま、少しずつ更新されて使われています。2階建てバスさえ健在。切手は白を背景にしたシンプルな構成で、これ以外に、各デザインを賛美する方法はない、と思わせるデザインです。

Celebrating the 1990 World Cycling Championship, which was held in Japan – track race in Maebashi and road race in Utsunomiya.  Nicely designed stamp – and again, the viewpoinrt is same to the previous four stamps!  Why?  While many other bicycle stamps proof that a racer can be pictured in many other different viewpoints?

1990年に日本で開催された世界選手権自転車競技大会を記念した切手。この年、トラック競技は前橋で、ロードレースは宇都宮で開催されました。綺麗な色彩で丁寧にデザインされた切手ですが、、それにしても、42年の歳月と、他国の自転車切手がたくさんの他の視点で発行された後に、4度目の同じアングルなのは、なぜ？

Celebrating the 32nd National Athletic Meet in Aomori – so, behind the racer there are Mount Iwaki and Iwaki River.  It seems Japanese stamp designers really like this angle to depict a bicycle racers – same as 3rd National Athletic Meet and Tokyo Olympic stamp.

第32回国体を記念した切手で、開催地の青森にちなんで岩木山と岩木川が背後に描かれています。それにしても、自転車競技選手の描写にはこのアングルから！と切手のデザイナーはいつも思うようですね。過去に2度発行された自転車の切手、第3回国体と東京オリンピックとほとんど同じ角度です。

I have not visited this exposition, but news showed me very opposite image from this calm atmosphere.  So, I did not pay special attention of this stamp until I found a bicycle under the tree.  Nice breeze it seems, but not really nice to ride on grass, though.

国際花と緑の博覧会を記念した切手。この博覧会を実際には訪れていないのですが、この切手の印象とはとても違うイメージを持っていました。木の下に自転車を見つけるまでは気にも留めていなかった一枚。こういう牧草地のような場所は、実はとっても自転車では走りにくいのだけど、、。

sound of Cicada / 蝉しぐれ

Nature Conservation Series: Euterpnosia chibensis, Boninthemis insularis, Graphium doson albidum & Luciola cruiata

All those insects have association to specific season strongly.  A week ago in Japan, I heard a lot of sound of Cicada, sound like strong squall, even in a small park in town.  Today I realised that no sound of cicada, and Red Dragonfly, a sympol of autumn, was elegantly flew in front of me.

ヒメハルゼミ、シマアカネ、ミカドアゲハ、ゲンジボタル。せみ時雨はわたしにとって、なつかしい夏の風物として「楽しむ」音です。一週間前は夏の終わりを感じつつもまだ公園などでセミの声を楽しんだ。台風が通り過ぎた今朝、セミの音はもうなくなり、目の前を赤とんぼが横切った。秋ですね。

追記：その赤トンボ、シマアカネが環境省の昆虫類レッドリストに入っていました。

Mixed to methods of photogravure print and Intaglio, this set of express delicate texture of different aninals – rare species of Japan in 1976.

The Iriomote Wild Cat of first stamp is now critically endangered.  Ryukyu Leaf Turtle is endangered as well.  The frog is surviving all right!

イリオモテヤマネコ、リュウキュウヤマガメ、モリアオガエル。動物保護切手として1974年からの2年間に発売された17枚のうちの3枚。凹版印刷とグラビア印刷を組み合せ、種類の違う動物の細かい質感を描き分けてあり、大好きな切手です。

追記：この3枚のうち、イリオモテヤマネコは現在国際保護動物になっていて、IUCN「絶滅寸前 Critically Endangered (CR)」、リュウキュウヤマガメもレッドリストに入っています。モリアオガエルだけは、まだたくさん居るようです。
