first stamp of Canada / カナダ最初の切手

I am a fan of Canadian stamps, especially when I learned the fact that their first stamp featured a Beaver!  OK, they made higher value stamps with the heads of Prince Albert and Queen Victoria at almost the same time, but they were issued a month later.  This perforated 5 cent stamp was the third edition of their very first Beaver, using the same design.

Another reason why I am a fan of Canadian stamps – is this fantastic archive.  People who made this archive are proud of their history and like to talk about the designers and artists involved.  I can see the face of the engraver, who carved a smiling sun behind the Beaver 160 years ago – this is great!

‘A beaver building a dam was symbolic of the people in the young country of Canada building their towns, cities, and communities’ – this is the reason behind the first stamp, according to the article in this archive.

国家事業としての郵政の、最初の切手の図案がビーバーだった。この事実を知ってから、カナダ切手のファンになりました。ほぼ同時に、宗主国イギリスのプリンス・アルバートとクィーン・ヴィクトリアの少し額の高い切手も作られていますが、発行が一月後です。

カナダの切手のファンになったもう一つの理由はこの切手アーカイブの存在です。これを作った人たちは自分たちの仕事に誇りを感じていて、関わったデザイナーやアーティストたちのことも丁寧に記録しています。160年前に作られた切手の、ビーバーの後ろで笑っている太陽を彫った彫刻師の顔写真が見れるなんて、素晴らしいと思うのです。

そのアーカイブの解説によると「木を切ってダムを作り立派な巣を作るビーバーの姿が、若い国で街や都市やそのコミュニティーを作っているカナダの開拓精神に喩えられた」のがビーバーが選ばれた理由だったのですね。

Another stamp with the Canadian Maple leaf, this time the main feature is their National animal, the Beaver.  This is the result of works by three people, the artist of the original art work, the designer and the engraver ( the job is completed by the printer, of course ).  It is interesting to read about them – their routes are from Germany, Holland and Canada.

The engraving work is really delicate and enjoyable to magnify… I know it’s a bit minor, but joyful!

カナダのカエデの葉が描かれているもう一枚の切手、主人公はビーバーです。この切手は原画の描き手、切手デザイナーと彫刻師の連携作業によって生まれたものですが、彼らの経歴を読むのは興味深い。ドイツからの移民、オランダ移民の子孫など、カナダが形づくられていった様子が想像できます。

凹版印刷のデリケートな彫りを虫めがねで拡大するのが楽しくて、楽しくて、、、。変ですかね、やっぱり。

Maple leaf / カエデの赤

The Maple leaf is the queen of autumn colour for me and of course, the Canadian national symbol as shown on their flag.  Even a small Maple tree shows its existence very strongly in this season.

This stamp allows me to imagine the chilly and fresh air of the late autumn in Canada.  Beautifully simple.

隣家の庭先や道の脇の木立でひときわ赤い色を放っているカエデ（メープル）の木を見るにつけ、カナダの国旗にも描かれているメープルは秋の色の女王だなぁ、と思います。日本の秋の山を彩るもみじもカエデの仲間ですね。

凛とした晩秋の空気を感じさせてくれる切手。これ以上なにも必要ないシンプルさで大好きな一枚です。

The Enchanted Owl / 魔法のふくろう

Since last autumn I have not heard the sound of an Owl at all, until tonight.  I am really pleased to hear it!

This beautiful Owl stamp is based on an Inuit artist’s work from 1960, named ‘The Enchanted Owl’.  How magical the Owl was in their tradition – I would like to find out.  In Canada, the indigenous people’s full political rights were entitled in 1960 – two years earlier than the Australian Aborigine – just 51 years ago.  That is a suprise.

昨年秋ぐらいから、まったくふくろうの鳴き声を聞かず、どうしたんだろう？と話していた今夜、久しぶりにはっきりした声を聞きました。あぁ、よかった。戻ってきた。

この美しい切手にはカナダの原住民イヌイットのアーティストの『魔法のふくろう』という名の石版画が使われています。この切手を見て、ふくろうがイヌイットや他の原住民にとってどんな意味を持った鳥だったのか、知りたいと思いました。カナダでは、この石版画が制作された1960年にやっと、原住民の参政権が認められています。オーストラリアのアボリジニよりは2年早かったとはいえ、今からたった51年前のことだと思うと、ちょっと驚きです。

less land? / あれ？

This beautiful stamp celebrates 60 years of the first Canadian Confederation, and the map shows its expansion.  Ah – wait a moment, the previous map of 1898 shows a little more land in red – the East end of the continent and the island in front.  The area called Labrador and Newfoundland were not the parts of Canada until 1949.  But it was British territory anyway, so the map of 1898 was correct.

1927年発行のこの切手はカナダ連邦の60周年を記念し、その後さらに拡大した国土が精緻な地図で描かれています。けれど、これと1898年の地図を比べると、、あれ？領土が減っているような。大陸の東端にあるラブラドールと呼ばれる地域と海峡をはさんだニューファンドランドは、1949年にやっとカナダに統合されたようです。それまでは英国領だったので、1898年の地図は正しかったのでした。

薄い横線でカナダ本土と区別された部分を拡大してみました。

vast lands on the earth / 広大な領土

It says on the bottom ”We hold a vaster empire than has been”.  This stamp celebrates Canada’s participation in the British postage system.  In this Mercator’s Projection, the Suzerain Country is a little island not even in the centre of the map… but it ruled a ‘vast empire’ from there.

The red colour is letter press printed over the intaglio, which is slightly off centre and some of the territory is floating in the sea – it was not a great matter, but the number of dots were important at that time, I imagine.

イギリスで確立していた郵便システムにカナダが参加した事を記念して発行されたクリスマス切手です。ヴィクトリア女王をたたえる詩（切手の下枠の中に）とメルカトル図法での世界地図にイギリスの領土が赤で色づけされています。

凹版印刷に重ねてプリントされた凸版の赤が少しずれていて赤い斑点が海に浮かんでいるのは愛嬌ですが、きっと当時は正確な位置よりも、どれくらいたくさんの場所に領土があるかが重要だったのだろうな、と想像するのでした。

rabbity looking / うさぎらしいうさぎ

There was a comment ( off-line ) on the previous post of Amami Rabbit – ‘it looks like a Rat!’…  All right – the length of the ears, isn’t it?  Here is a more authentically Rabbit looking one, but this is technically a Hare!

This is a definitive stamp, featuring a fluffy animal adopting its appearance to the Winter colour.  The surrounding pattern is ecovatively 80′s for me.

元旦の切手に「ねずみに見える。」というコメントが。えーと、耳の長さですね、つまり？それでは、次にウサギらしいウサギを。けど、これは野うさぎなのです、正しくは。

背景には雪景色に合わせて毛が抜け替わるふわふわした雰囲気が出ていますね。そして、この線描には懐かしい80′sな空気が。ホットドッグとかドーナツのイラストの背景に、わたしもこんな線を使った遠い記憶があります。

riding in the woods / 森の中を走る

Another stamp featuring a family cycling in the woods from Canada, in mono-colour.  This one has unusual Intaglio effect on it – you can see the Olympic rings over the picture if you enlarge.

I don’t have a catalogue of Canadian stamps.  Is anyone able to tell me about the designer who did this optical illusion?

家族で森をサイクリングしている切手をもう一枚。これもモノトーンで、凹版印刷の技術を使って不思議な効果を出していて、拡大するとオリンピックのマークが見えてきます。

カナダの切手のカタログを持っていなくデザイナー名が不詳です。どなたかご存知だったらぜひ教えてください。

map making in snow / 極寒の地で地図を作った人

There is no sign of spring here in London yet.  The car is covered with frost and it takes extra time to get to work in the morning.

I watched a TV program on David Thompson recently, an English man who lived in Canada and dedicated his life to map making of North Canada.  He learnt a lot from his wife, a native American, and members of her family – how to survive in severe climate.  I like this stamp, as it pictures the atmosphere of cold Canada and this committed man.

ここ数週間ロンドンでは寒い日が続き、出勤前に凍った車のフロントガラスを溶かすのが日課になっています。

少し前にテレビで観た『カナダ地図を作った人』が描かれた切手を見つけました。エスキモーの女性と結婚し、彼女やその家族から極寒のカナダを旅する知恵を学び、地理観測に生涯を費やしたイギリス人。彼の没後100年を記念したこの切手からは寒いカナダの雰囲気と彼の苦労が伝わってきます。

tools for everyday / 日常の道具たち

I like this idea of Definitive stamps are giving spotlight on everyday objects.  Stable Lantern for example, hand made with tin.  Fishins spear remainds me native Canadian’s history, which had been heavily relying upon fish.  Skate blades makes me imagine how North the country is.

普通切手に生活の雑器が描かれていると、その国で毎日の生活が大事にされている印象を受け、嬉しくなります。このカナダの80年代のシリーズには厩のランタン、木製のバケツ、風見鶏、魚を穫っていたヤリ、狩猟のためのデコイ、冬の寒さを想像させるスケートなどが描かれ、かつての生活を想像させてくれます。
