Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles

The five colours of the Rainbow Jersey – Blue, Yellow, Black, Green and Red – are representing five continents.  And yes, I finally realise that they are the same colours to make Olympic symbols, which was designed in 1912.  Now I learnt that each colour represents Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and North & South America in that order.

This stamp shows a track race, nearing the finish – the sprinter in front is a little behind the other – but for sure, he will be the winner as the other racer is distracted by the speed of the guy in the Czech national jersey.

マイヨ・アルカンシエルの5色がオリンピックシンボルの5色と一緒だということに、今ごろ気付きました、、。青、黄、黒、緑、赤の五色はその順にヨーロッパ、アジア、アフリカ、オセアニアと南北アメリカを表す、と英語版ウィキペディアにあるけれど、日本語版では「どの色の輪がどの大陸をあらわしているかという意味はない。」と書かれている、不思議。アジアが黄色って！？と抗議する人がいるとも思えないのですが。いるのかな。

この切手はチェコ代表選手がトラック競技のゴールを競っている図柄です。チェコ代表はこの時点で2位に見えるけれど、もう一人の選手があれ？と横を見ているうちに追い抜かして1位になるに違いない、というスピード感が好きです。

Duhový ( rainbow ) / 虹の道

Cyclocross World Championship

There is another stamp on the theme of rainbow colours and cyclocross.  This time, intaglio printed Black plus three colours are used – green is made with Yellow and Blue, Light Blue is made by dots of Blue and the Grey… oh, no, looks like Grey, but is Silver.  Two years before their Gentle Revolution, the Post Office had a generous budget for popular sports of the country.

I like these Czechoslovakian intaglio stamps with gravure colours added – simple and free minded drawings.

サイクロクロスとレインボー・カラーの組み合わせでもう一枚。

これは凹版印刷のかりっとした黒い線にオフセットの原色の赤と黄色と青を足して、緑は青と黄色を重ね、グレーは黒のドットで、、、と思いつつよく見ると、自転車と背景の2人はグレーではなくて銀色でした。「ビロード革命」が起こる2年前の1987年、共産党政権に対する不満が高まって選手の表情が暗いのかな？でも郵便局はふんだんに資金を持っていたみたい、、、などと邪推したくなるのですが、チェコスロバキアの白バックの闊達なドローイングの切手はどれも好きです。

Maglia iridata / マリア・イリダータ

World Championship of Cycling – Cyclo Cross

The rainbow jersey is known as ‘Maillot arc-en-ciel’ in French and ‘Maglia iridata’ in Italian.  This time, the stamps are showing Cyclo Cross – the athletes sometimes have to carry their bikes during the race.

These Italian stamps are kind of evocative – reminds me when I prepared for an entrance examination for the Art university in Japan.  I have a piece of paper and coloured pencils – then the brief says ‘You have five colours.  Make a colour composition in relation to the words – ‘Rainbow stripes’, ‘Cyclo Cross’ and ‘Speed’.  Condition: use geometrical lines only.  Time: 1.5 hours’.

In fact, the colours are nicely overlapped with knowledge of the print processes.

マイヨ・アルカンシエルは英語では「レインボージャージ」イタリア語では「マリア・イリダータ」になります。この切手は、競技の途中で自転車をかついで走るサイクロクロスの世界選手権を描いています。

この切手を見ると、美大受験の予備校での色彩構成の練習を思い出すのです。課題は『レインボージャージとサイクロクロス：色は5色まで使用可。幾何学の線のみを用いて色彩構成し、スピード感を表現せよ。時間は1時間半』

でも実は、印刷のことをよく知っている人が色を重ねて構成している、手のかかっている切手ではあるのですが。

Rainbow jersey / マイヨ・アルカンシエル

Cycling World Championship

In international cycling events, you see a rare few athletes wearing this jersey – 5 coloured stripes on a white background. They are called Rainbow jerseys and only World Champions of the time are allowed to wear them, and only in the discipline in which they won the Championship.

This stamp shows a racer Gustav-Adolf Schur of East Germany (via), who was twice the winner of the World Road Race Championship in 1950s.

Those racers look proud of wearing the Rainbow jersey, but they are also fighting against the ‘Curse of the rainbow jersey‘ – the champions are always challenged by competitors.

自転車競技を観ていると、5色の縞で飾られたこのジャージを目にします。これは「マイヨ・アルカンシエル」と呼ばれ、自転車競技大会の世界選手権の優勝者のみが着ることができます。ストライプの緑、黄、黒、赤、青の5色は五つの大陸を表しているのだそうです。

この切手には世界自転車選手権で1958年と59年に2度の優勝を果たした東ドイツのグスタフ＝アドルフ・シューアが描かれています。

マイヨ・アルカンシエルを着るのはもちろん名誉なのですが、次にレースに臨むと「アルカンシエルの呪い」と呼ばれるような結果や事故が起こることすらある、という例を上記のウィキペディアで読んで、勝者のプレッシャーというのも大変だなぁ、、、と思ったのでした。

追記：友人が「自転車が小さい」とコメント。たしかに、そう思ったら選手が妙に大きいですよね。実は、このグスタフさんが巨大な選手で、切手デザイナーはことさらそれを強調した、、、というような事実が見つかると面白いのだけど。

spectators / 観客の存在

Cycling World Championship

It was interesting watching the Track Cycling World Cup highlights on TV this past weekend. Several athletes mentioned that they were supported by the spectator’s cheers a lot, especially when they were almost burnt out towards their goal.  It seems that cheers make a difference to achieve good competition and new records.

This stamp is showing a lot of spectators in a velodrome – although their faces are a bit expressionless…   I featured another stamp, which is showing spectators alongside the road to support Tour de France racers – in this case, they are more animated with their arms raised.

トラックレースの中継やハイライトを観ていて印象に残ったのは、レーサー達が観客の声援に励まされたことを繰り返しインタビュアーに話したことです。6000人の観客が立ち上がって応援したイギリス選手達がよい結果を残したのも、偶然ではないのでしょう。競技場では、選手たちはたくさんの応援者を代表して頑張るわけですね。

この切手も自転車競技場の観客の顔が選手のうしろにびっしり描き込まれていますが、表情にとぼしくちょっと怖い。もう一枚、以前に紹介したツールドフランスの切手には、沿道の観客がしっかり盛り上がっている様子が描かれています。

track cycling / トラックレース

For the last three days we have been watching the Track Cycling World Cup, which was held at the new Olympic Velodrome in London.  It seems the velodrome is a really fine piece of architecture and the audience there were very excited to witness great performances, especially by the British racers.

This set of stamps are delivering the atmosphere of the indoor velodrome well, also the tension and speed of track cycling.  Keirin, a type of racing originating from Japan is now one of the official event in the World Cup and a pacer, on a Derny motor bike is the peculiarity of that race, although the stamp above actually shows another type of motor paced racing where each racer is paced by their own motorbike.

Back in 1963, these stamps were sold to raise supportive fund for Belgium cyclists to be at the Tokyo Olympic in 1964 (via Va-lo:Vé-lo ).  The fund might help the Gold Medal of 1000m time trial in the Olympic.

金曜日から3日間、ロンドン・オリンピックのために建てられた自転車競技場で開催された「自転車トラック競技ワールドカップ」のハイライトやライブを観ていました。初日に会場に行ったパートナーのレポートによると、マイケル・ホプキンス設計のこの建築はとても素晴らしいらしく、観客すらも高揚感を持つようです。

この切手はそんな室内競技場でのスピード感やゴールの緊張をよく伝えています。特に一枚目の、がに股でバイクに乗った「ペーサー」と呼ばれる人が自転車を先導する切手が面白い。日本の競輪競技が世界的な種目になった「Keirin」ではこのペーサーが一台登場し、選手を牽引します。

1963年に発行されたこの切手は、翌年の東京オリンピックに出場するベルギーの自転車選手のための基金を募る寄附金付き切手でした。この基金が功を奏したのか、オリンピックではベルギー選手がトラックレースの1キロ・タイムトライアルを制しています。

peace race / 平和な競争

The last day of the Tour de France is traditionally peaceful and friendly – until a few laps before the goal.  All the team members of the winner and lots of others wore yellow sun glasses this year, as if they praised everyone’s courage.  Yes, riding through 21 stages is already a huge achievement.

These stamps are celebrating the 15th Peace Race, which started in 1948 to recreate a friendly reunion between Czechoslovakia and Poland, then extended to Berlin in 1952.  ‘Peace’ in different languages shows how international the race was already in 1962.

I forgot almost – but the right hand side top corner of this stamp below is my blog icon picture.

昨日のツールドフランス最終日は、恒例の「競争しない日」で、和気あいあいと話しながら、黄色のサングラスで勝者を讃えながらの行進、という風情。ただ、ゴール直前のシャンゼリゼでのスプリントだけは例年盛り上がります。

この2枚の切手は1948年に戦後の関係修復としてポーランドとチェコスロバキア間で始まった「平和レース」の15回目を祝ったものです。1952年には東ドイツも加わって3都市間レースになり、その後さらに距離も伸びて2006年まで続きました。

ほとんど忘ていましたが、2枚目の切手の右端がこのブログのアイコン・イメージです。ブログを始めてから2年と2ヶ月後にやっと掲載。

god of speed / スピードの神様

1975 Ecuador

Stage 20 of Tour de France was the sole individual time trial.  A lot of solitary battles on the 42.5 km route.  Cadel Evans became the first Australian winner of this historic race.  He was absolutely tuned into winning – as if the God of speed was with him.

This Ecuador stamp is showing a cycle racer ( doesn’t it? ) in the style of their Inca god – in the form of a time trialist.  I wish Thomas Voeckler had come at least third – he did really great, though.

今日のツールドフランスは個人のタイムトライアルで、優勝を賭けた孤独な戦いはオーストラリアから初めてのツール勝者となるカデル・エバンスが制しました。「勝ってやる！勝ってやる！」と背中に書いてあるような、そんなこぎっぷり。

エクアドルの切手の中でタイムトライアルのポジションで疾走しているレーサーは、インカの神様の装束です。今日のエバンスには、たしかにこんな神様が一緒でした。応援していたトマ・ヴォクレールは無念の4位。よく頑張った！！

mountain stage / 上り坂

It was a tough mountain stage at the Tour de France today – the racers made a great effort to pedal up Alpine mountains.  The last one was 15 km long up-hill – Alpe d’Huez – after they have already ridden 85 km on very hilly roads…

This stamp from Morocco for the Olympics in Rome shows the climbing moment – the strange shape of his mouth is maybe expressing the clenching of teeth!  Arabic letters are dancing around this racer, supporting his effort – maybe?

今日のツールドフランスはタフなアルプス越えでした。歯を食いしばって渾身の力でペダルをこぐ若者たちは感動を呼びます。レースのハイライトを見ていると、だんだんと自分も一緒に坂道をこいでいるような気になって、終わるとぐったり疲れるのでした。

このモロッコの1960年の切手はそんな山道をこぐレーサーを描いているようです。口が変な形になっているのが「うへー」と言っているようにも見える。上下のアラビア文字が飛び跳ねながらフレーフレーと応援している風情なのですが、、、読めなくて残念。

This stamp does not show the name of the rider pictured, but it is Eddy Merckx who won the World Championship in 1971.  Shortly after the launch of this stamp, he also won the Tour de France of 1972, for the third time.

On the contrary to this feature, I am enjoying the absence of the ‘superstar’ in the Tour de France 2011 – stage winners are honestly talking about the support they have received from team mates, and I like the modest comments by Thomas Voeckler, who has kept his Maillot jaune for nine days.  I am now a great supporter of his – why not a French winner after 26 years of foreign riders winning?

名前は載っていませんが、描かれているレーサーは世界選手権自転車競技大会の1971年の勝者エディ・メルクスだと思われます。この切手が発行された数日後に、彼はツール・ド・フランスの1972年の優勝を飾りました。

この切手とは対照的に今年のツール・ド・フランスはスーパースターが不在で、それがいい感じなのです。ステージ勝者たちはチームメイトの協力を讃え、9日もマイヨ・ジョーヌを保持しているトマ・ヴォクレールはインタビューのたびにすっとぼけた調子で「明日はどうなることやら、、」と八の字眉毛の笑顔になる。クールなスターよりも、不安と隣り合わせのこんなレーサーを応援したくなります。さて、26年ぶりにフランス人が優勝するのか！？

final sprint / 最後のひとこぎ

Road Championship of the World

The sprint competition points system has been changed for this years Tour de France, which is making the tour more exciting to watch.  Teams work hard to bring their sprinter to the height of speed to ride for the intermediate sprints – as well as the final few hundred of meters before the goal of the day.

This Belgium stamp from the late 60′s depicts well the hard work of legs and I can almost hear the squeaking noise from the bike…

ツールドフランスのスプリントポイントの数え方が今年から変わり、ハイライトを観る楽しみが増えました。チームが一丸となってぐりぐりと前に進み、一番早いスプリンターを最後にラインに送り出す。ライン間近で競り合うそんな瞬間の選手たちの全身の筋肉の動きや「うがー！」という表情は迫力があります。

この1960年代最後のベルギーの切手は、自転車がきしむ音が聞こえてきそうなほど、その瞬間の様子をとらえていて、お気に入りの一枚です。

cycle lanes / 日常の移動手段

Stamp Day

I was in Köln last week and saw a lots of cyclists like this lady in the centre of the busy town.  Separated cycle lanes are placed between car lanes and pavements all over the town and suburban area.  You can take your bicycle into trams, as well as trains.  With this superb infrastructure, the cyclists are relaxed to move around, less cars and fuel consumption – as a result you become fit, too.  Why not those separate lanes in London??

家具見本市でケルンに行き、車道と舗道の間に作られた自転車専用レーンを行き来するこの切手のようなサイクリストをたくさん見ました。郊外行きの列車はもちろん、町中を走るトラムにも自転車を持ち込める。こんな環境がロンドンにもあれば、もう少し安心して走りまわれるのになぁ。

Another stamp featuring a family cycling in the woods from Canada, in mono-colour.  This one has unusual Intaglio effect on it – you can see the Olympic rings over the picture if you enlarge.

I don’t have a catalogue of Canadian stamps.  Is anyone able to tell me about the designer who did this optical illusion?

家族で森をサイクリングしている切手をもう一枚。これもモノトーンで、凹版印刷の技術を使って不思議な効果を出していて、拡大するとオリンピックのマークが見えてきます。

カナダの切手のカタログを持っていなくデザイナー名が不詳です。どなたかご存知だったらぜひ教えてください。

The snow has stayed for a week on country roads and I couldn’t take the risk of riding on frozen surfaces.  It was raining all day today, so maybe tomorrow we have the chance to ride?

The detail in this stamp is great, as enlarged below.  Slania has proven that single coloured stamps can be very enjoyable.

積もった雪が道路をかちかちに凍らせてから一週間ほど経ちます。ぜったいに転ぶと思って自転車に乗ってないのだけど、かなり限界。風を切って走りたい！今日は一日中雨だったので、雪も溶けたはず。明日には出かけてみます。

このスラニアが彫った凹版印刷のディテールは素晴らしいです。単色でもここまで描き込める、という挑戦のような切手。

cycling in France / フランスの田園サイクリング

Cycling environment in France is advanced to compare to our situation in Britain.  Cycle lanes are well laid and sign posted both in towns and countryside, maintained.  Maps are nicely produced and effortless to follow scenic routes.  Especially I enjoyed hilly countryside of Poitou-Charentes nead Confolens – small beautiful river views and picturesque villages, as this stamp depicted.

This postman stamp is another example of Intaglio print, which I enjoy a lot with magnifier.

自転車を車に積んでフランスに渡り、サイクリングを楽しんできました。市街や郊外には専用レーンが整備され、地図とサインをたよりに一日中、迷う事なくサイクリングできる環境は素晴らしい。特に、ヴィエンヌ県の丘の多い田園の小さな村を抜けていくルートはこの切手のような風景と森や農場が延々と続き、とても楽しいものでした。

ひと昔前のパイプをくわえた郵便配達を描いている凹版印刷のこの切手も、虫メガネで覗くといろいろ発見できる一枚です。

50th Tour de France / ツールドフランス50回

This year’s Tour de France is the 97th of its event.  It started in 1903, suspended for 11 years at the World War Ⅰ and Ⅱ, then back on 1947.  This set of stamps are celebrating its 50th event, issued from Monaco. Top one depicts scene in 1903, when every racer had moustache and carried spare tires in case of puncture, the second one is a cyclist in 1963, when helmet was not worn.  I found an article in holga blog, collecting old photography of Tour de France, .

Both stamps are beautifully engraved Intaglio, especially the first one is showing details of tool bag on handle bar, great effort on racer’s face and excited spectators with moustache!

ツール・ド・フランスは1903年に始まり、第一次と第二次の世界大戦の間に計11年ほど中止され、1947年に再開されてからは毎年続いて今年が97回目だそうです。この2枚の切手は50回目の大会を記念してモナコで発行されたもの。1枚目は初期のレーサーがヒゲをたくわえていた頃、2枚目は1963年ごろのようですが、当時はヘルメットをかぶっていなかったのですね。ある写真家のブログで古いツール・ド・フランスの写真を集めた記事を見つけました。

2枚とも精緻な彫りの凹版多色印刷で、特に1枚目は苦しそうなレーサーの眉間のシワやハンドルバーに付けられた革製のツール・バッグ、背景で応援している観客のヒゲまで描き込まれています。拡大して、にこにこしながら見入ってしまう一枚。

今日のステージ11の最後のスプリントでは新城選手が先頭集団に残り、6位に入っていましたね。すごい！

sprint on cobbles / 石畳を走り抜ける

Tour de France has stared last Sunday, today was the second stage in Belgium.  There were a few crashes last 2 days – the wet slopes are nasty for everyone.  One of three leading racers Maarten Wijnants was flying off when they got in the cobbled road yesterday – he had showed off that he was Belgium!

I was in Belgium at the end of June, took part in the Retro Ronde near Oudenaarde and cycled beautiful country lanes for 40 kilometers.  There were a few cobbled path and had shaken all parts of my body.  Belgium say ‘that is good for your health!’ but I don’t believe it – I had headache by wobbly eye sight.  The Tour will experience the longest cobbled road of Trouée d’Arenberg, 2.4 kilometers long, tomorrow in the third stage.

2日前の日曜からツール・ド・フランスが始まりました。オランダのロッテムダムにスタートし、ステージ2の今日は全行程がベルギー。昨日は、中盤のレースを引っ張った3レーサーのうちベルギー人のマールテン・ワイナンツ が、道が石畳になった瞬間に猛スピードで飛ばしてベルギー人であることを見せつけたのですが、先日参加したレトロ・ロンドというヴィンテージ自転車のイベントで、わたしもその石畳を体験し、全身の肉をぶるぶると震わせました。ベルギー人は「あれは身体にいい」と言うけど、視界が揺れ続け、頭痛がしました。

明日のツール・ド・フランスの第3ステージでは、2.4キロ続く石畳で有名なアランベール (Arenberg) の石畳道を通過するそうです。日本からのレーサーもたった一人、新城幸也が参加。がんばれ。

切手は1963年の凹版印刷が美しいチャリティー切手。石畳のスプリントを競うゴールを描いています。

Another nicely coloured stamp on Olympic Games in Tokyo 1964, from Albania.  Again, I looked up wiki, and found it again -although the country was in difficult situation, they produced beautiful stamp.  Perhaps you just needed one officer in post office, who can design within limitation.

同じく東京オリンピックを記念した切手を、アルバニアから。場所は知っていたけれど1964年がどんな年だったのか知りたくて、wiki検索しました。ソ連との対立で共産圏の中で危うい立場にあったようなのに、こんな素敵な切手を発行していることが興味深い。センスのあるデザイナーが一人いれば、4色刷りの切手でも美しいものになるのですね。

Nice colour and composition stamp from Uruguay in South America, for the Tokyo Olympic 1964.  The racer trained very hard until sun sets.  It seems well adjusted letterpress print and designer name is found on a corner.  I did not know exact location of the country, so looked up wikipedia and discovered that they kept making high quality stamps, despite in their economical difficulties of 1960′s.

中米から南米に移動し、ウルグアイから1964年の東京オリンピックの切手です。夕日を浴びながらトレーニングを積む選手の姿でしょうか。凹版印刷と思われる正確な重ね版で、文字とオリンピックマークは濃淡で描き分けられています。国の正確な場所を知らなくてwiki検索し歴史を読みました。経済状態の苦しかったらしい1960年代にも、丁寧な切手作りが続けられたのですね。

racer’s legs? / レーサーの足？

It seems have relation to Tokyo Olympic 1964.  The bicycle looks like one for track racing and legs are young girl’s ( aren’t they? ).  There were no Women track racing until 1988 and Women road race was started in 1984. This atractive stamp has nice colour and unique composition, but mysterious.

Also it says on the bottom ‘ Dai Nippon Printing Co Ltd Japon’ – so, this stamp was made in Japan.  What was the connection between Japan and Nicaragua in 1960′s?

左肩にオリンピック印があり1964年の東京オリンピックと関連がある？と思ったのですが、、、自転車をこいでいるのはどう見ても女の子の足だけど、1988年まで女子のトラックレース種目はなかったし、ロードが始まったのも1984年からのようなのです。爽やかな色合いとかっこいい構成の切手ですが、内容は不思議です。

しかも欄外の下に「Dai Nippon Printing Co Ltd Japon」と書かれていて、この切手は大日本印刷で刷られたようです。独裁政権下だった1960年代のニカラグアは日本に繋がりがあったのですね。
