1963 Belgium

For the last three days we have been watching the Track Cycling World Cup, which was held at the new Olympic Velodrome in London.  It seems the velodrome is a really fine piece of architecture and the audience there were very excited to witness great performances, especially by the British racers.

This set of stamps are delivering the atmosphere of the indoor velodrome well, also the tension and speed of track cycling.  Keirin, a type of racing originating from Japan is now one of the official event in the World Cup and a pacer, on a Derny motor bike is the peculiarity of that race, although the stamp above actually shows another type of motor paced racing where each racer is paced by their own motorbike.

Back in 1963, these stamps were sold to raise supportive fund for Belgium cyclists to be at the Tokyo Olympic in 1964 (via Va-lo:Vé-lo ).  The fund might help the Gold Medal of 1000m time trial in the Olympic.

金曜日から3日間、ロンドン・オリンピックのために建てられた自転車競技場で開催された「自転車トラック競技ワールドカップ」のハイライトやライブを観ていました。初日に会場に行ったパートナーのレポートによると、マイケル・ホプキンス設計のこの建築はとても素晴らしいらしく、観客すらも高揚感を持つようです。

この切手はそんな室内競技場でのスピード感やゴールの緊張をよく伝えています。特に一枚目の、がに股でバイクに乗った「ペーサー」と呼ばれる人が自転車を先導する切手が面白い。日本の競輪競技が世界的な種目になった「Keirin」ではこのペーサーが一台登場し、選手を牽引します。

1963年に発行されたこの切手は、翌年の東京オリンピックに出場するベルギーの自転車選手のための基金を募る寄附金付き切手でした。この基金が功を奏したのか、オリンピックではベルギー選手がトラックレースの1キロ・タイムトライアルを制しています。

‘Explorers on the Moon‘ by Hergé, 1954

I like this interior colour – Hergé must have been influenced by his contemporary designers, such as Jean Prouvé.  Design details for light weight structures and round corners of drawers, dots on the floor… they all are reflecting the atmosphere of that time.

Why do I categorise this in ‘kawaii/cute’? – the back view of Snowy… his skinny neck is so cute!

『月世界探検』に出てくる宇宙船のインテリアの色合いが好きです。作者のエルジェは、間違いなくジャン・プルーヴェなどの同世代を生きたデザイナー達の仕事に影響を受けていたと思います。軽量化のための穴、角の丸い引き出し、床の丸い模様など、どれも時代の空気を感じさせてくれます。

そして、スノーウィーのほっそりした首の後ろ姿がかわいいので「kawaii」カテゴリーに。

Tintin 3D / 立体タンタン

In fact Hergé worked on 3D films and made clay figures for ‘Destination Moon‘ in 1953 and ‘Explorers on the Moon‘ in 1954.  The sketch shows his detailed design for that evocative Red & White checkered spaceship.

Then the Belgium post released a set of stamps which shows his Black & White stop motion animated film of 1947, based on his illustrated book of ‘The Crab with the Golden Claws‘ of 1941.

So – it’s not hard to think that he imagined quite a detailed ’real’ version when Spielberg told him his ideas about filming Tintin.  Was the concept of digital 3D indicated at that time already?

タンタンの原作者エルジェはかなり初期から、絵本のフォーマットを越えて先に進むことを考えていたのですね。この2004年の切手には、1953年の『めざすは月』と1954年の『月世界探検』のために作られたフィギュアが作者とともに載っています。宇宙船の詳細なスケッチにも、立体的な世界を構想していた跡がみられます。

そして今年、たぶん3D映画化にあわせてベルギー郵便から発売された切手シリーズには、1941年にすでに作られていたストップ・モーション撮影によるアニメ映画『金のはさみのカニ』の一コマが。白黒でしっかり影が出ていて、雰囲気があります。

彼が亡くなる前にスピルバーグが訪れて「実写タンタン」の構想を伝えた時、エルジェとスピルバーグはデジタルによる3D化の可能性も話したのでしょうか？

final sprint / 最後のひとこぎ

Road Championship of the World

The sprint competition points system has been changed for this years Tour de France, which is making the tour more exciting to watch.  Teams work hard to bring their sprinter to the height of speed to ride for the intermediate sprints – as well as the final few hundred of meters before the goal of the day.

This Belgium stamp from the late 60′s depicts well the hard work of legs and I can almost hear the squeaking noise from the bike…

ツールドフランスのスプリントポイントの数え方が今年から変わり、ハイライトを観る楽しみが増えました。チームが一丸となってぐりぐりと前に進み、一番早いスプリンターを最後にラインに送り出す。ライン間近で競り合うそんな瞬間の選手たちの全身の筋肉の動きや「うがー！」という表情は迫力があります。

この1960年代最後のベルギーの切手は、自転車がきしむ音が聞こえてきそうなほど、その瞬間の様子をとらえていて、お気に入りの一枚です。

sturdy nurse / 頼れる看護婦さん

I fell off my bicycle yesterday and had four stitches in my knee.  The nurse at the accident and emergency unit of the local hospital was very reassuring and highly professional.  She was very comforting and made a shocking ‘stitching session’ endurable.

This set of stamps from 1925 Belgium is depicting a sturdy nurse with supportive energy, appealing for a charity for people suffering from Tuberculosis.  This campaign was continued until the 1950′s, when the disease was almost exterminated in the Western World.

昨日、田園サイクリング中に転び、膝を4針縫う怪我をしました。最寄りの救急病院で、とても頼れる感じの看護婦さんがリラックスした雰囲気で手当をしてくれ、「縫い合わせ」は、想像したほど怖くなく終了。出会う看護婦さんの人柄は、患者の心理には大きく左右することを実感しました。

この切手セットは結核患者のための義援金をつのる1925年のものですが、たくましく美しい看護婦さんが描かれ、協力を呼びかけています。このような寄附金付き切手シリーズは1950年代まで、結核が治療可能な病いになるまで発行されました。

‘Caritas’

Charity stamps, known also as semi-postal, were a great invention to collect charitable funds to support people who need help.

Caritas, named after the Latin for ‘charity’ or ‘virtue’, was formed by Catholic members in 1897.  Their mission was to make a better world, especially for poor and oppressed people. I consulted the history of Belgium around 1927, but did not discover who Caritas were raising money for in this case.  Whoever the people in the boat are, the stamps are in impressive contrast between sad faces and the abstract lines of waves – appealing for help.

ヨーロッパには古くから援助の精神があったようですが、切手の額面を少し増やして義援金を集める寄附金付き切手は1890年代に発行されはじめたようです。

「Caritas」は1897年にドイツで設立され今も続くカソリック系の団体です。援助は貧困に苦しむ人たち、政治的にしいたげられた人たちなど向けられますが、この切手の1927年のベルギーで、荒れた海に浮かぶ小さな舟に乗っていたのが誰だったのか、調べてみたけれどわかりませんでした。誰だったにしろ、悲しみに沈む表情と象徴的な波の描写が印象に残る切手です。

sprint on cobbles / 石畳を走り抜ける

Tour de France has stared last Sunday, today was the second stage in Belgium.  There were a few crashes last 2 days – the wet slopes are nasty for everyone.  One of three leading racers Maarten Wijnants was flying off when they got in the cobbled road yesterday – he had showed off that he was Belgium!

I was in Belgium at the end of June, took part in the Retro Ronde near Oudenaarde and cycled beautiful country lanes for 40 kilometers.  There were a few cobbled path and had shaken all parts of my body.  Belgium say ‘that is good for your health!’ but I don’t believe it – I had headache by wobbly eye sight.  The Tour will experience the longest cobbled road of Trouée d’Arenberg, 2.4 kilometers long, tomorrow in the third stage.

2日前の日曜からツール・ド・フランスが始まりました。オランダのロッテムダムにスタートし、ステージ2の今日は全行程がベルギー。昨日は、中盤のレースを引っ張った3レーサーのうちベルギー人のマールテン・ワイナンツ が、道が石畳になった瞬間に猛スピードで飛ばしてベルギー人であることを見せつけたのですが、先日参加したレトロ・ロンドというヴィンテージ自転車のイベントで、わたしもその石畳を体験し、全身の肉をぶるぶると震わせました。ベルギー人は「あれは身体にいい」と言うけど、視界が揺れ続け、頭痛がしました。

明日のツール・ド・フランスの第3ステージでは、2.4キロ続く石畳で有名なアランベール (Arenberg) の石畳道を通過するそうです。日本からのレーサーもたった一人、新城幸也が参加。がんばれ。

COP15 / コペンハーゲン国際環境会議

2009 Belgium

COP15 has started last week.  I saw more stamps this year, featuring environmental issues.  Hope those little stamps deliver the important message we all have to share all over the world.

コペンハーゲンの国際環境会議が先週はじまりました。今年、環境をテーマにした切手がたくさん発行されたのを見ました。小さな切手に乗せて、メッセージが世界中に届くことを願います。
