During this Olympic games I watched several sports which I was not familiar with.  One of them was Diving – throw oneself from a high board, perform acrobatic rotations or twists within a second or two and enter the water with minimum splash… the TV cameras showed great details of control of muscles in the air.

My first feature of a stamp on London 2o12 Olympic Games is designed by an artist, Julian Opie, who is good at capturing flexible movement of the human body.

大企業の過剰コマーシャルにはうんざり、と思いつつも、これだけ盛り上がるとやっぱり観てしまうオリンピック。普段あまり目にしない競技で思いのほか楽しんだのは「飛び込み」です。特に、細やかな筋肉の動きがあちこちから狙う望遠カメラで仔細に映し出され、飛び込み台の高さを実感できるのもおもしろかった。選手たちが揃って男前だった、というのもありますが、、、。

という訳で、今年のオリンピックを取り上げた切手として、最初にジュリアン・オピーのこの一枚を紹介します。たくさんの選手を観たのちに、この線描は良くしなやかな動きをとらえているなぁ、と感心したので。

Oak leaves and a cat / ナラの上の『黒き猫』

‘Black Cat’ (1910) by Shunso Hishida (1874-1911)

The cat is sitting on an Oak tree – we are more familiar with straight Oak trees, but sometimes it is bendy and provides a good place for a cat.

The painter Shunso Hishida started to bring innovative techniques into traditional Japanese painting around 1900.  He traveled to India, America and Europe between 1903-05, after which he even tried pointillism – but the Japanese painting authorities did not accept him at that time.  It is a pity that he died young and did not try to stir up the artistic circles further.

オークは木材用のものはまっすぐですが、こんなに曲がった育ち方をすることもあるのですね。

原画は明治時代の夭折の画家、菱田春草の『黒き猫』という作品です。1900年頃から輪郭線を使わない画法を試していたこの画家は、岡倉天心と一緒にアメリカとヨーロッパを旅し、帰国後には点描で日本画を描くことを試したようです。「ジャポニズムの影響を受けて始まった」とされる印象派の作品に触れ、その革新に刺激されたのだろうか？と推測するのも面白いです。

Tintin 3D / 立体タンタン

In fact Hergé worked on 3D films and made clay figures for ‘Destination Moon‘ in 1953 and ‘Explorers on the Moon‘ in 1954.  The sketch shows his detailed design for that evocative Red & White checkered spaceship.

Then the Belgium post released a set of stamps which shows his Black & White stop motion animated film of 1947, based on his illustrated book of ‘The Crab with the Golden Claws‘ of 1941.

So – it’s not hard to think that he imagined quite a detailed ’real’ version when Spielberg told him his ideas about filming Tintin.  Was the concept of digital 3D indicated at that time already?

タンタンの原作者エルジェはかなり初期から、絵本のフォーマットを越えて先に進むことを考えていたのですね。この2004年の切手には、1953年の『めざすは月』と1954年の『月世界探検』のために作られたフィギュアが作者とともに載っています。宇宙船の詳細なスケッチにも、立体的な世界を構想していた跡がみられます。

そして今年、たぶん3D映画化にあわせてベルギー郵便から発売された切手シリーズには、1941年にすでに作られていたストップ・モーション撮影によるアニメ映画『金のはさみのカニ』の一コマが。白黒でしっかり影が出ていて、雰囲気があります。

彼が亡くなる前にスピルバーグが訪れて「実写タンタン」の構想を伝えた時、エルジェとスピルバーグはデジタルによる3D化の可能性も話したのでしょうか？

cooking beauty / 台所美人

‘Kitchen Beauties’ by Utamaro ( 1753? – 1806 )

This kitchen might be located in a house or outside – so, I sort it in ‘food and cooking’ category.  The original woodblock print is in the collection of Tokyo National Museum, as well as Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

This stamp is well representing details – coiled handles on boiling pot, delicate patterns on Kimono, smoke comes out from the cooker and a lot more.  It is great pleasure to inspect it with a magnifier.

喜多川歌麿の『台所美人』は、虫メガネでじっくり観察すると本当に楽しい一枚です。着物の柄、しなやかな手に握られた包丁と丸ナス、釜の持ち手についたコイル状の針金、炉から吹き出る煙。小さな切手にこのディテールを再現したデザイナーと印刷職人の心意気に拍手をおくります。

元になった木版画は東京国立博物館とボストン美術館に収蔵されています。

reading a letter / 文読み

‘Reading a letter’ by Harunobu Suzuki, 1750

This stamp was issued for Universal Postal Union Congress, showing a woman reading a long letter, in her house with great detail of Tatami mat, sliding wooden panels with paper, and a Bonsai pot on wooden floored terrace.

Harunobu Suzuki ( 1724? – 1770 ) was a woodblock print artist and invented slim long legged girls as his style.  This print is in the collection of Tokyo National Museum.

この切手は万国郵便大会議を記念して発行され、鈴木春信（1725? – 1770）の木版画で現在は東京国立博物館に収蔵されている「中納言朝忠（文読み）」( 1750 ) が原画です。畳や障子、縁側に置かれた盆栽など、室内のディテールが楽しめる切手です。

足の指や着物の模様などの原画の繊細なディテールを再現しているのに、なぜか版画の線も文字の線もぎざぎざなのは、印刷技術の発展途上だったのでしょうか？

Southern paradise / 南方楽園

A retrospective of Paul Gauguin is starting tomorrow at Tate Modern in London.  In relation to this, there are TV and radio programs, talking about this artist’s life – it seems a lot of people think he was immoral.  Perhaps we have to see his works, to judge if he was a bit out of the way or was lucky to have a different approach to others of that time.

The title of this picture ‘Arearea’ means joyousness in Polynesian language. Interpretation of the original by engraver is very interesting – it was a challenge within limited printing colours as well, and it is done really well.

明日からロンドンのテート・モダン美術館でポール・ゴーギャン展が始まります。関連して「妻子を捨て、南の島で少女を追いかけていた画家」とされるゴーギャンの生涯は本当にそうだったのか？と問う番組がテレビとラジオで放映され、これは展覧会を観に行かねば、と思いました。

この切手は1892年にタヒチで描かれた『アレアレア（楽しい時）』という題の油絵を、デリケートな凹版印刷と色の組み合せで復刻させた美しい切手です。原画はオルセー美術館収蔵。

devil in your mind? / 魔がさす？

I feel really tired today and realise that I drive meanly.  Not allowing anyone cuts in, didn’t give way when one was wanting to cross.  Then I saw this stamp, picture from Henri Rousseau – ah, this is it! A little devil sitting in my car, doesn’t allow me to be generous…

The original picture was painted in 1908, now owned by Musée de l’Orangerie.  This intaglio interpretation is nicely done, trying to evoke its original’s atmosphere.

ロンドンデザイン週間が終わり、身体が疲れ果てると気分までさくさくし、運転をしていても他者に親切になれない自分を発見。なんだかな〜、と思っている時に、このフランスの切手を見ました。これこれ、小さな悪魔が一緒に車に乗っている！

『ジュニエ爺さんの二輪馬車』という題のついたアンリ・ルソーの代表作の一枚（オラン ジュリー美術館収蔵）は亡くなる2年前の1908年に描かれ、丁寧な凹版印刷で切手になっています。小さな悪魔の顔が意外とかわいいので、拡大します。

un grand merci / 大感謝

It is said ‘Autumn is for Art’ in Japan.  Hot summer has finally gone and people start to read again and go to museums.  It was really too hot this summer to think – well, I have just experienced two weeks of it, and it was enough.

Anyway, I am back on this blog and featuring stamps by Benjamin Vautier, known as Ben is one of Fluxus artists.  He has a funky website, but did not tell me about his stamps at all ( my French problem ), I found the issue year finally on French wikipedia!  These stamps remind me an installation at Ecole d’art à Blois completed in 1995, named ‘Mur des mots’.

I am having my first solo exhibition at Rocket Gallery in East London from 18 September and these stamps express my current feeling as well.

暑かった日本の夏がようやく終わろうとしているのをtwitterで読み、ほっとしているところです。たった2週間しか体験しなかったのに、かなりのインパクトでした。

さて、気分を一新して芸術の秋。フランスではアーティストの切手が多数発行されていますが、フラクサスのメンバーでもあったベン・ボーティエの切手は彼の手描き文字に小さな穴が開いていて、粋な仕上がりです。フランス中部の都市ブロワの芸術学院の壁面に施されたインスタレーションは、こんな雰囲気のたくさんの文字のパネルで構成されていました。

この秋、London Design Festival時期に東ロンドンのRocket Galleryにて初めての個展を開くことになり、やっと今週、招待状を送ります。この2枚の切手は、わたしの今の心情をよく表現してくれています。

Marianne de Cocteau / コクトーのマリアンヌ

I visited Notre Dame de France in Soho, after reading about a fresco by Jean Cocteau.  Drawings are free, poetic, calm but somehow humorous.  He also made a fresco in the church of Milly-la-Foret near Paris, where he spent his last years, and two years before he died he designed a stamp.  I love this stamp and its chic lightness, which contrasts with the country’s heavy history.

ジャン・コクトーの描いたフランス共和国の象徴「マリアンヌ」。池澤夏樹の『異国の客』でコクトーが教会に壁画を残したことを知り、ロンドンのソーホーにある教会 Notre Dame de Franceのものを見に行きました。ユーモアをたっぷり含む軽やかな線描を、1959年末に8日間滞在して彼自身が描いたのだそうです。独特の「軽やかさ」とヘビーなフランスの歴史の対比が、大好きなこの切手の妙なのではないかと思います。

‘Winter in Northern Area’ and ‘Towards morning light’ by Yumeji Takehisa

Two more female portraits, painted both in 1921, by Yumeji Takehisa, an early Japanese commercial illustrator and book designer.

Somehow – maybe it is because the Japanese traditional paintings or wood prints are suitable for being transformed to stamp format – there are a lots of Japanese stamps issued under this category ‘beautiful ladies’.  Almost always portraits are made of anonymous female models, posed in front of artists.  This is not a category I am collecting stamps, but some of them are quite suitable for stamps.  They were my mother’s favorite stamps and as I put on ‘about this blog‘ post, I received a few letters with those stamps on.

竹久夢二の絵画が題材になった切手をもう2枚。ともに1921年の『北方の冬』と『朝の光へ』。

たぶん、日本画や木版画の浮世絵などが切手のサイズに縮小しておさまりが良いのでしょう、日本ではかなりの頻度で「美人画」が切手の図案として採用されていますが、他国にあまり例がありません。海外のコレクターに受けが良い、という理由かもしれません。収集テーマではないけれど、すんなりと綺麗だなぁと思える日本の切手です。この2枚は母のお気に入りでもあったので、この切手の貼られた手紙をわたしは何度か受け取りました。「このブログについて」にも消印付きを載せています。

Black Ship Inn / 竹久夢二『黒船屋』

‘Kurofune-ya’ painting by Yumeji Takehisa (1884-1934)

The artist Yumeji Takehisa was an early example of commercial illustratior and graphic designer, as well as a poet.  He was one of first artists who went abroad, tried to open a school for illustration and design.

This was painted on rolled silk on paper as ‘hanging’, around 1919.  The title of this painting ‘Black Ship Inn’ came from the wodden box the model is sitting on – a sign of an inn named after a large ship from America, led by Matthew C. Perry.  This ship, first arrived to Japan in 1853,  was the direct force for Edo Shogun to open the counrty.  Later, the image of Black Ship was turned positive, as symbol of Westernising and industrial development.

竹久夢二の代表作といわれる『黒船屋』。黒船の到来で揺れ動いた幕末からほぼ50年経った大正時代、この絵が描かれた1919年ごろには『黒船』はすでに西欧化、文明開化のシンボルだったのでは、と想像します。着物姿だけれどモダンな印象の女性と、巨大な黒猫。これが時代の空気だったのでしょう。挿絵や本の装丁を多く手がけグラフィック・デザイナーの先駆けとなったこの作家の掛け軸の作品が、そのまま切手としてすんなり見えるのも、なんとなく頷けます。

when she was 80 years old / 80歳のお祝い

This Australian modernist woman photographer was 80 years old when this stamp was issued.  Very nice way to celebrate history of photography and also achievement of a pioneer female photographer.

この切手が発行された時、写真家オリーブ・コットンは存命で80才でした。女流写真家の開拓期を築きつつも商業的には成功といえなかった彼女が、晩年に代表作が切手になってさぞかし嬉しかっただろうな、と想像します。
