When I saw this stamp, I thought this crisp telephone design must be the inspiration for the Ericsson telephone which I featured – but the fact seems the opposite.   The Henry Dreyfuss Associates web site is linked to a wikipedia articles, which says that the Ericsson phone was designed in 1929 and Henry Dreyfuss was influenced by that.  So, I amended my post accordingly.

This series of stamps ( 12 of them ) are showing early examples of American industrial design – some of them are familiar and the rest are not.  Simple images are featured, but there is no denomination on the stamp…  Is ‘Forever’ the replacement of postal price?

Two more designs for communication tools below – the radio was designed by Dreyfuss’s mentor Bel Geddes.

この切れのある電話機の切手を見た時、3つ前のポストで紹介したエリクソンの電話機はこれを見て影響を受けたのかも？と思ったのだけど、事実は正反対だったようです。今でも続いているHenry Dreyfussの事務所のHP（おそろしくダサいデザインですが、、）からだどって行くwikipediaの記事に、1929年にデザインされたエリクソンの電話機に影響を受けたとしっかり記されていました。

この12枚セットの切手はアメリカのインダストリアルデザイン黎明期を紹介しています。中には見慣れたデザインもあります。ラジオをデザインしたNorman Bel Geddesは、Dreyfussがかつて見習いとして働いたことのあるステージデザイナーでした。

Here in South East England, we have been having this extreme weather – blue sky in the morning and thunder and heavy rain in the afternoon – for last two weeks.  These rains must be giving a great relief to farmers, forests and all plants in the country, after the record dry winter.  The little buds on the Silver Birch tree in front of our house have grown significantly.  Summer soon? ( or too early to say? )

This set of stamps from Finland were issued last year, using the same die-cut tool as the Water Ripple stamps in 2008 – the shape is working better this time, I think.

ロンドンでは「午前は快晴、でも午後から雷が鳴ってどしゃ降り」という天気がここ2週間ほど続いています。雨の少なかった冬の後で水不足が心配されていたから、農家や森の木々にとっては恵みの雨です。やっぱり水が足りていなかったのか、家の前のシラカバも今年は新芽が遅かったのですが、ここ数日で小さいながらも葉っぱの形になってきました。夏はすぐそこか（それにしては寒い！）？

このフィンランドの切手は2008年の水シリーズの「押し切り型」を使い回しているようですが、、、こっちのほうが図柄としっくり合っている気がしません？

It has been a year since the Tohoku Earthquake happened on 11 March 2011.  There are still a lot of people living in temporary housing, and the debris of towns and cities washed away by the Tsunami are still piled beside the roads in many areas. The nuclear power station is still in the cooling down stage before sealing it off.

This set of stamps were issued to raise emergency support for the struck area, prepared within three months after the earthquake – I guess that was very quick compared to the normal process of issuing stamps.  The design is the reflection of the wish of many Japanese at that time – willing to deliver a message that we are thinking of people who lost their loved ones and their homes.

There was a charity concert in London last Sunday 11 March, to raise continuous support for Tsunami orphans.  Music has a strong power to share, and unites this supportive wish.  I was moved by slides which showed people around the world giving their encouragement to Japan after the tragedy.

東日本大震災寄附金付

震災からはやくも一年。あの頃は「デザイナーはこんな時に、どんな役に立てるのか？？」と毎日考え込んだけれど、そんな思いも日々の忙しさにかき消されていた、そのことを考えたここ数日でした。まだまだ復興の道のりは長く、福島の逼迫した事態に触れた天皇陛下のお言葉がニュースでは編集され、原発反対の人間の輪は警察に阻まれる現実。遠くから見て、やるせない気持ちになった週末でした。

この切手は震災から3か月で発行され、被害者の救援への寄付金を募りました。デザインが抽象的すぎるのでは？震災と津波で失われた美しい風景や被災各県に伝わる伝統文化などを題材にしては？という意見も読みました。たしかに、そういうリサーチに時間をかけてじっくり作られた切手は今後、被災地へのサポートが忘れられそうな頃に必要になってくると思いますが、今回はスピードが肝心だったので、まずは暖かい気持ちにさせてくれる切手に拍手を送りたいと思います。

追記：切手の博物館で開催された『愛の切手展』でこの切手が紹介されたようです。東京の友人が、デザイナーのコメントが載っているリンクを送ってくれました。「一枚でも多く売れてほしい」という願い。なるほど。

year of the cat / ねこ年

After I wrote ‘four days to the end of the year of Rabbit’, I realised that at the origin of the Chinese zodiac, new year does not come until 23 January 2012.  Also in Vietnam, one of the countries to follow the tradition of the Chinese zodiac, this year is the year of Cat.  This set of stamps were issued at the end of 2010, for the new year celebration of 2011.

Yes, the world consists of great diversity.  I want to learn more about those interesting differences and how people express their originality, through the world of stamps.

「うさぎ年もあと4日」と一つ前のポストで書いてのち、十二支の発祥国である中国では新年が来年の1月23日まで来ないことに気付きました。そして、ヴェトナムでは今年は「ねこ年」だったことも。この切手は2010年の末に発行された、2011年の新年を祝うものだったようです。

世界は多様な気候と生活様式と考え方に満ちている。そんな興味深い違いについて、そんな違いがどんな風に目に見えるのかを切手を通して発見したい、という思いを新たにしています。

みなさんに素敵な新年が訪れますよう。

‘Collect GB Stamps‘ by Royal Mail covers almost all stamps issued in the United Kingdom since the world’s first adhesive postage stamp – the Penny Black. I don’t have the real one, so here is a stamp that features it.

The archive site has huge image records, scanned presentation pack covers, and articles on each stamp.  This is a great archive, but could be improved a lot by featuring the people and stories behind the stamps – designers, creators of original art works, engravers and printers.

As far as I can see, this is the 6th time the first stamp design has been depicted, firstly in 1940 ‘Centerary of First Adhesive Postage Stamps’, in 1970 ‘Philympia 70 – the stamps exhibition’, in 1990 ’150th Anniverersary of the Penny Black’, in 1992 ‘Greeting Stamps – Memories’, in 1995 ‘Pioneers of Communications’ and finally the one featured above.

イギリスの切手ももちろんアーカイブになっています。世界初の切手と最初の切手蒐集家を生んだ国ですから。そしてその世界最初の切手は「Penny Black」と呼ばれるヴィクトリア女王の横顔です。本物を持っていないので、今年発行されたその切手の切手をここに。

アーカイブには切手だけでなく、一緒に発行されるプレゼンテーション・パックのスキャンやテキストなどが掲載されていますが、残念ながらデザイナーや彫刻師のことは触れられていない。切手に関わる背景が語られたらもっと面白いのになぁ、と今後に期待するのでした。

わたしが見つけた限りでは、「最初の切手」をモチーフにしたイギリスの切手発行は6度目です。1940年に「切手の100周年」が祝われて以来、1970年に「スタンプ・フェア70の記念」、1990年に「Penny Blackの150年記念」、1992年のグリーティング切手にPenny Redが載り、1995年にはスラニアが彫った「通信のパイオニアたち」、そして今年発行の「ハノーバー家の時代」に、ヴィクトリア女王の切手が登場します。

Four more stamps are issued together with the set from the previous post, Pooh and Me.  I always thought this child was a girl, but in fact it is a boy, A. A. Milne’s son Christopher.

『くまのプーさん』の切手は先に紹介した絵だけの6枚と、文章も載せているこの4枚がセットです。わたしは『くまのプーさん』の文章を読んだ記憶がなく、絵を見て女の子だと思っていたのだけど、作家の長男でクリストファーという名前の男の子でした。

the last rabbit! / もう一兎

OK, the last rabbit of this season – and my best favorite set from last year.  This was issued under Europa, according to the theme of the year ‘Children Books’.  Many Europa stamps are featured in this Europa stamps blog, some future issues as well.  The theme of this year is ‘Forest’, as it is the International year of forests.  I am looking forward to it.

これが最後の一兎です。昨年の一番のお気に入りで、年賀状を送り出す時にも使った『くまのプーさん』がウサギに会うシーン。これはEuropa切手の昨年の共通テーマ「子供の本」に沿って出されたセットです。Europa切手の今年のテーマは「森」。すでにEuropa Stampsブログでは予告の画像が多数載っていますが、各国から出される森の切手の実物を楽しみにしています。

Set of 10 – other 5 feature albums, ‘The Division Bell’ by Pink Floyd, ‘Parklife’ by Blur, ‘London Calling’ by The Clash, ‘Led Zeppelin Ⅳ’ by Led Zeppelin and ‘screamadelica’ by Primal Scream.

The first set of stamps issued in 2010 – in fact, they were issued two days ago and arrived to me yesterday.  I like this design of vinyl sticks out from the album cover and little shadow to let you know a bit of thickness of it.  Shine on albums are all different.

The presentation pack features designer of the cover – for example, Peter Saville talks why he used French realist painter for this cover.  Album covers were phenomenon of the time and stories on cover design give us pleasure of exploring between music and graphic design.

2010年の最初のシリーズで、おとといの日付で発行され、昨日手元に届きました。ジャケットからレコードが少し出ているこのデザイン、少しだけある影がジャケットの厚さを表したり、レコードの反射が一枚ずつ違うのも芸が細かいですね。

Royal Mailから送られて来たPresentation Packには各アルバムを手がけたグラフィックデザイナーの解説があり、デザインのコンセプトや、どんな風にミュージシャンと出会ったかなどのエピソードがあって面白い読み物になっています。レコードジャケットを見るとその時代を思い出す人も多いと思うし、音楽とグラッフィックデザインの両方から楽しめる切手。
