‘Centenary of the Magic Circle’

I met a Japanese magician this summer, who told me about the Magic Circle, where he performed sometime ago.  I remembered the story now, because I found this set of stamps, which are celebrating the Magic Circle’s 100 years.

Following their tradition with a top hat and a tailcoat, these pop designs recreate nice visual illusions within small stamps – pity you cannot rub digital images, but I feature one which I scratched with a coin.

I have ‘head’ of the coin, not ‘tail’.

The year of the rabbit is ceasing in four days.  I have this feeling that a year gets shorter and shorter – is it proving the fact that I am getting older faster!?

この夏東京で出会ったあるマジシャンが、ロンドンにあるマジック・サークルで公演した時のことを話してくれたのを、この切手のタイトルを探していて思い出しました。そのマジック・サークルの100年の歴史を2005年に祝っていたのでした。

燕尾服やシルクハットという伝統も描きながら、デザイナーはこの小さな切手で出来る紙面トリックをいろいろな手法で試していて面白いです。画像をこすってもらうわけにいかないので、わたしがコインで引っ掻いたのちの画像も載せます。

うさぎ年もあと4日で新しい年に変わります。なんだか、一年がどんどん短くなっていくと感じるのは、わたしの加齢が加速しているのか！？とちょっと焦る年末なのでした。

big appetite in autumn / 食欲の秋

There is a saying in Japan that your appetite grows in autumn.  Yes, I have eaten a lot in Istanbul last week and now here in Tokyo.  My appetite will be more developed in Hiroshima in the next week, then I will start to miss my everyday meal in London.

This is the third radish stamp in my collection.  In Europe, now is the time to make preserved food, the grace of forest.

食欲の秋、というのは本当だなぁと思います。どうしてこんなにお腹が空く？と不思議になるほどです。仕事をしていたらお腹が空いて当然だけど、なんにもしていない移動待ちの半日とか、そんな生産的でない夕方にもぺこぺこにお腹が空くのはちょっと理不尽な気がする。

赤カブを描いた切手がもう一枚ありました。スウェーデンの秋の味覚と保存食作りの切手。ヨーロッパでは秋の味覚は大事に保存され冬を越す食料になります。

Another triangular stamp – in the shape of a tent.  I would imagine that in the early time of scouting, boys and girls were not together in a tent!… now they are happily on one site and enjoying new freedoms.

Each face pictured here remainds me someone I know – it is strange, though.

三角切手をもう一枚。図柄はちょっとあか抜けないけれど、テントの形の見立てが面白いと思います。100年前はきっと男子と女子は厳格に活動が分かれていたのだろうけれど、、、今はさすがに、男子と女子、いろんな人種が交流しているよ、と切手で訴えている感じもあり。

それにしても、描かれているどの顔もわたしの知っている誰かと似ているのが、、、変な感じです。

It happened in Tunisia and now in Egypt – they are telling us that the group of people who share opinions are exchanging information and being united faster than ever.

This stamp is evoking this change in forms of communication, and at the same time telling us the tactile quality we shouldn’t forget.  In fact, we are re-discovering the artistic value of letter press and traditional methods in stamp printing as well – I hope.

チュニジアの政変につづきエジプトでも、インターネットとソーシャル・ネットワーキングが意見を同じくする人々のつながりを早めたのは確かなことのようです。

この切手は近年のこの変化を図柄にしつつ、凸版印刷の伝える素敵な素材感を忘れないで、と言っているように見えます。レタープレスの名刺や本が静かな人気を保ち続ける日本で、凹版や凸版印刷の切手も再評価されて高い品質のものが発行されたらいいのにな、と願うのはわたしだけでしょうか？

I am amazed at how just a few elements can express a sense of  interior.  Wallpaper, the corner of a picture frame, a chair and its shadow – they are enough to convey the atmosphere of the room and taste of the owner.

壁紙、額縁、イスとその影。ほんの少しのアイテムとしつらえを描き出すだけで空間が出現して、部屋の雰囲気とか住んでいる人の好みがすっかり分かる。そういえば、インテリアってそういうものかも、、と思ったりします。

それにしても、ビーダーマイヤー様式が「簡素」の表現だったとは。たしかに、さらに以前は室内空間はもっと装飾的だったのですね。

un grand merci / 大感謝

It is said ‘Autumn is for Art’ in Japan.  Hot summer has finally gone and people start to read again and go to museums.  It was really too hot this summer to think – well, I have just experienced two weeks of it, and it was enough.

Anyway, I am back on this blog and featuring stamps by Benjamin Vautier, known as Ben is one of Fluxus artists.  He has a funky website, but did not tell me about his stamps at all ( my French problem ), I found the issue year finally on French wikipedia!  These stamps remind me an installation at Ecole d’art à Blois completed in 1995, named ‘Mur des mots’.

I am having my first solo exhibition at Rocket Gallery in East London from 18 September and these stamps express my current feeling as well.

暑かった日本の夏がようやく終わろうとしているのをtwitterで読み、ほっとしているところです。たった2週間しか体験しなかったのに、かなりのインパクトでした。

さて、気分を一新して芸術の秋。フランスではアーティストの切手が多数発行されていますが、フラクサスのメンバーでもあったベン・ボーティエの切手は彼の手描き文字に小さな穴が開いていて、粋な仕上がりです。フランス中部の都市ブロワの芸術学院の壁面に施されたインスタレーションは、こんな雰囲気のたくさんの文字のパネルで構成されていました。

この秋、London Design Festival時期に東ロンドンのRocket Galleryにて初めての個展を開くことになり、やっと今週、招待状を送ります。この2枚の切手は、わたしの今の心情をよく表現してくれています。

Miffy is touring / ミッフィー展、巡回

The exhibition of Go Go Miffy is touring several venues in Japan.  So, I will have a chance to see it in the future!

It is odd not to show stamps inside the ‘sorroundings’ – here you are.  The hiding Miffies come out to dance, write and sit.  The whole sheet was below ( not anymore in the condition… ).

前回のポストで紹介した『ゴーゴーミッフィー展』は全国を巡回します。これなら、どこかでちゃんと見れそうです。

そして「フチ」を紹介して切手じたいを載せないのは変よね、やっぱり、と思い、中の切手も紹介します。きっと、上記展示会に原画がありますね。楽しみ。シートから切り取る前はこんなひと続きでした（下）。

Go Go Miffy / ゴーゴーミッフィー展

They are not stamps, but illustrated sorrundings of Miffy stamps of Netherland.  Miffy is a rabbit character of children’s books from 1950′s, which are still continued.  There is an exhibition in Tokyo named ‘Go Go Miffy‘, showing original drawings and artworks for printing – and tomorrow is the last day of this exhibition.  I am big fan of stamps designed by Dick Bruna and so pity not to see this exhibition…

松屋銀座で開催中の『ゴーゴーミッフィー展』が明日5月10日まで、というのを今日になって知りました。これを見れるように帰国の予定を立てるんだった、、、残念。そこで、この展示会HPで使われているイラストが、切手ではないのだけれど「フチ」に印刷された絵だったので、それをここでアップします。ミッフィーのファンのクリエーターから55歳の誕生日に寄せられたプレゼント、というのも見たかったなぁ。ブルーナの切手にはホントに毎回きゅーん！となり、きっといつかユトレヒトのブルーナ美術館にも行くと思うのです。

Fibonacci number / 兎の問題

Another rabbit stamp from Macau – and this, time it is about Golden ratio.  Rabbit is representing Fibonacci number, by non-seasonal constant mating…  Each stamp shows four different theory to describe the Golden ratio exists in nature or rules sense of beauty.  The top centre Golden letter is ‘φ’, after Greek sculptor Phidias, who is thought the first user of this Golden ratio.

Macau is issuing their own stamps even after its return from Portugal to China in 1999.  They have unique mixture of West and East in their stamp range.  This one is designed with love and respect for findings, I think.

兎を描いている切手をもう一枚、マカオから。この兎たちはフィボナッチ数に登場する問題の一つを表し黄金比が自然界に与えている美しい法則の一つを図示しているのでした。続く3枚も、同じく黄金比の自然界における例。

マカオでは、1999年の中国返還ののちも、こうやってポルトガル名のデザイナーが切手をデザインしているのですね。白抜きの背景には黄金比の近似値がびっしり印刷され、かりっと仕上がった端正なデザイン。

Only today and tomorrow are the rest of this year.   The Chinese Zodiac animal of this year was Ox.  This stamp has nicely illustrated Bull, rather Ox, has wild eyes and flying legs.  Starts in middle of perforation dots before the stamp is separated from sheet.

あと2日で丑年の2009年も終わります。この中国の切手は据わった目つきの牛を描いてかっこいい。飛んでいるような足元も素敵です。目打の中央に星の形が切り取られていたり、なかなか凝っています。

second day of eating / 飽食の2日め

Boxing Day.  Many of you might keep eating today.  Another stamp on food – Amatriciana is one of the most well known pasta sauce in Italian cuisine.  The picture shows snowy mountain behind, but Province of Rieti, where this sauce is coming from is Mid-South of Italy, not far away from Rome.

クリスマスの翌日は、英国ではボクシング・デーと呼ばれ、休日です。25日に家族が集まり、そのまま2日間食べ続けている人も多いようなので、もう一枚、食に関するイタリアの切手を。アマトリチアーナと呼ばれるパスタソースの食材を描いています。背後に雪をいただいたような山が見えているけれど、ローマからほど近いリエーティ県で作られていたパスタのようです。

disappointment / 残念

It was a big disappointment that COP15 failed to make substantial agreement on anything really positive.

Stamps are designed higly contemporary, human and intelligent, also there were a lots of discussions on environment and sustainability these years – but world leaders aren’t ready yet facing contemporary wisdoms.  Shame.

コペンハーゲンの環境会議は合意を交わせないまま終わりました。この切手のすばらしく今日的なクールさに対し、世界の指導者たちは地球の将来を左右する叡智にたどり着く準備がまだできていなかったことを露呈。まったくもって残念です。

COP15 / コペンハーゲン国際環境会議

2009 Belgium

COP15 has started last week.  I saw more stamps this year, featuring environmental issues.  Hope those little stamps deliver the important message we all have to share all over the world.

コペンハーゲンの国際環境会議が先週はじまりました。今年、環境をテーマにした切手がたくさん発行されたのを見ました。小さな切手に乗せて、メッセージが世界中に届くことを願います。

My best favorite British stamps of this year, 2009 – Design Classics.  Simple and straight forward – with White background and often a face view.  Nostallgic – as Creative Review blog describes, and still are familiar landscape of London. Minis are everywhere, each school has 100 Polypropylene chairs and no. 9 Routemaster is still taking us to Royal Albert Hall.

2009年も終わりに近づいていますが、今年一番のお気に入りをまだ紹介していないことに気づきました。10枚一度に発行されメディアでも話題になった英国デザイン・クラシック。「ノスタルジック」とも言われていますが、これらは今でもロンドンの日常に存在するデザインです。ミニはまだ走っているし、ロビン・ディの椅子はどの学校でも使われ、地下鉄地図もこのまま、少しずつ更新されて使われています。2階建てバスさえ健在。切手は白を背景にしたシンプルな構成で、これ以外に、各デザインを賛美する方法はない、と思わせるデザインです。

Two years apart of issuing, I am sure they are done by one designer.  The feature of stamps are both related to care for blind people.  For me, those are the finest examples of computer aided design of contemporary stamps – simple, clear to express the theme and they talk to our emotion.

2年の間隔をあけて発行されている2枚ですが、同じデザイナーが手がけ、テーマも盲人のための施設に関することのようです。シンプルな構成ながら、見る人に視覚障害について想像をさせ、そのサポートに尽力した人たちの歴史を讃えている。近年、間違いなく切手もコンピューター上でデザインされていると思うけれど、こんな風にコンピューター処理を効果的に使っている例は、実はあまりないのではないかと思います。

Ice Crystals / 雪の結晶

Water forms beautiful crystals when the atmosphere becomes minus zero.  This morning, I had to scrape my car before start to drive – I wish I had time to bring my magnifier to see them.  It was a winter morning and I did not have time!  In ‘the iciest web site in the world’, you can see 12 different patterns of ice crystals recorded in 1902 by Wilson Bentley.

By the way, is it only me to think that it would be graphically nicer if the centre of the stamp is centralised to the ice crystals?

Additional note: Wilson Bentley’s original ‘Photomicrograph’ works are recently in auction and some larger iamges are available here ( on 23 Jan 2010 ) .

今朝、路上に停めてある車のフロントガラスがかちかちに凍っていました。水は氷点下で素敵な結晶を作ります。あわてて融かさないでゆっくり観察すればよかった。冬の朝は、なにかと忙しいですね。ちなみに、結晶の形は温度と水蒸気量のバランスで決まるそうです。大阪市立大学のHPより。

それにしても、この切手のちょうど真ん中に結晶のイラストが配置されたらもっと格好良いのに、、、と思うのはわたしだけですか？

追記：1902年にWilson Bentleyが撮影した’Photomicrograph’という手法のオリジナルの写真が最近（2010年1月23日現在）、オークションに出されてこのサイトで見る事ができます。

A family on bikes under a tree / 木の下の家族

Another stamp of tree and bicycle.  Not yet researched what this stamp is about, but illustration is done by traditional paper cut method, depicting a family cycling in wood.

木と自転車の切手をもう一枚。何を記念しているのかまだリサーチできていませんが、伝統的な切り紙の手法で木の下をサイクリングする家族が描かれています。

water ripples / 水紋

Are they a kind of definitives?  Simple idea and mysterious cut shape self adhesive stamps.  I may use this as a square stamp to avoid wasting  large part of water ripple print.

これは普通切手の一種でしょうか？シンプルな発想で、不思議な形に切られているセルフのりの切手。きれいだけど、捨てる部分が多すぎてもったいなく、結局、ふつうの正方形で貼りこんでしまいそうです。

Moomin / ムーミン

Stories of Moomin valley is very popular in Japan, but I recognise that it is not well known in the UK.  Finish post has issued several set of stamps on this children books, which were fist published in 1954.

In this set of stamps from 2007, Moominmama is cooking outdoor.  Also they tell us that Finland is a contry of water.

ムーミンは日本では誰もが知っているけれど、英国ではあまり知られていません。フィンランドではムーミンに題材をとった切手がたくさん発行されています。

このシリーズではムーミンママが湖畔のたき火で料理をしています。トンボや咲き乱れる花が晩夏を思わせる色合いで、フィンランドが水の国であることを教えてくれます。

2009年3月28日に開催された「アース・アワー」を宣伝する切手。上はフクロウで、下はたぶんクモザルだと思うのだけど、、違うかな？すっきりしつつチャーミングな絵柄でメッセージがまっすぐ伝わります。
