Cool mono colours, crisp intaglio engraving and simple composition. These stamps evoke an adoration for the short and precious Northern Summer and praiseworthy energy of trees.
かりっとした彫り線とシンプルな構成で、単色なのに素敵な仕上がりのアイスランドの切手です。冬を生き延びてまた葉をつけるけなげな木々を丁寧に描き、到来を待ちわびる短い北の夏を象徴しているようです。

Letter Writing Week
I finally realised myself that I have an envelope fetish – I cannot throw away used but not damaged envelopes, especially one that has a nice coloured lining or printed patterns. I made a set of artworks, using those insides of used envelopes for a charity exhibition, and it was very satisfactory when someone bought them.
So, I am naturally attracted by this charming 1950s stamp from Turkey. They are on their way to be delivered, as they have cancellation marks.
最近になって気付いたのですが、わたしはきっと「封筒フェチ」なのです。送られる郵便物の封筒をなかなか捨てられない。特に、封筒の中に模様が印刷されているのが好きで、そんな封筒の裏を使ってチャリティー展示会のための作品を作ったことがあります。それが売れた時には、共感してくれた人がいてとても嬉しかったのです。
こんな風に封筒がふわふわ浮いているチャーミングな切手を見つけると、だから必然のように買ってしまう。切手に消印も見えます。ただ、この図柄から「信頼できる郵便サービス」は連想できない、、ですよね。

50 years of Maritime High School
I used the top stamp for my studio’s new year celebration image, since the New Year is the year of the Dragon. Because the Japanese name of the creature in the sea is translated as ‘Child of Dragon’, I thought it was called Sea Dragon in English, too.
Now I know that the Sea Dragon is leafy one, or like algae – and the normal ones are named Sea Horse. Maybe all non-Japanese people did not get why I used the Sea Horse… never mind!
This set is celebrating the Turkish Maritime school in Istanbul. I visited Istanbul for the first time last year. Beautiful view it has, surrounded by oceans – it is an important place between Europe and Asia.
昨年末はあわただしかったので年賀状をあきらめ、上の一枚をスタジオの年賀の画像に使いました。メールを送り出したあとで「で、どうして Sea Horse の切手なの？」と聞かれて、、、ぇえ！？
タツノオトシゴは英語で Sea Dragon だと思いこんでいたのだけど、こんなひらひらが付いているのとか、さらにひらひらで海藻に見えるこんなのだけが Sea Dragon で、あとは Sea Horse だったのです。日本語でもウミウマとかカイマとも呼ばれてることも初めて知りました。
この2枚はイスタンブールの海事学校の50年を記念したものです。ぱっきりした文字ときれいな色合いのバックグラウンドにちょっとボケた凸版印刷のモチーフが重なっている、お気に入りのセット。イスタンブールには昨年初めて行き、海に囲まれた美しい眺望を堪能しました。アジアとヨーロッパをつなぐ要所なのは間違いないです。

Another stamp with the Canadian Maple leaf, this time the main feature is their National animal, the Beaver. This is the result of works by three people, the artist of the original art work, the designer and the engraver ( the job is completed by the printer, of course ). It is interesting to read about them – their routes are from Germany, Holland and Canada.
The engraving work is really delicate and enjoyable to magnify… I know it’s a bit minor, but joyful!
カナダのカエデの葉が描かれているもう一枚の切手、主人公はビーバーです。この切手は原画の描き手、切手デザイナーと彫刻師の連携作業によって生まれたものですが、彼らの経歴を読むのは興味深い。ドイツからの移民、オランダ移民の子孫など、カナダが形づくられていった様子が想像できます。
凹版印刷のデリケートな彫りを虫めがねで拡大するのが楽しくて、楽しくて、、、。変ですかね、やっぱり。

‘Pigeons released from mobile loft’

Following a Dove stamp from Switzerland, I pick up this from Monaco. I did not know that people had this mobile Homing pigeon hut until seeing this stamp. Pigeon keeping was popular from ancient times until the 1960′s, as they delivered communication materials. A Pigeon-Gram service even existed at the end of 18th century to the early 19th century. Domestic pigeons also provided valuable manure for farmers – thus many beautiful Dovecotes still exist.
ハトの切手つづきで、モナコの1950年代の「移動小屋から飛びたつハト」です。となりに飼い主のテントもあります。ロフトの語源が屋根裏のハト小屋だったこと、移動するロフトもあったことなど、この切手を見るまで知りませんでした。糞が畑の肥料になったこともあり、伝書鳩の飼育は古代から1960年代ごろまで続き、今も多くの鳩舎が残っています。インド警察は「インターネットの普及」を理由に2002年で伝書鳩の飼育をやめたようです。ということは、ファックスよりは鳩が信頼されていたのかな。

Girl Scout World Camp at Quezon City
The girl scouts movement started in Japan in 1920, but in the Philippines it started 63 years earlier, in 1857. This clover leaf is the emblem of the girl scouts. Simple and clean design, with four tents behind a silhouette of a girl, with a streak of cooking smoke… I get hungry somehow.
p.s. The Scouting Movement started 1907 – it seems the year 1857 on this stamps has nothing to do with the Scounting… a bit of mystery remains.
日本のガールスカウトは1920年に始まったのだけれど、フィリピンではそれより63年早く1857年には活動が始まっていたようです。このクローバーがガールスカウトの紋章ですね。単色のシンプルなデザインで、少女の背後に4つのテントと調理しているらしい煙が一筋、、、お腹が空くのはなぜだろう。
追記：ボーイスカウトが1907年にはじまり、ガールスカウトは翌年1908年が発足のようなので、この切手に記された年号1857はスカウト運動とはどうやら関係がないようで、、、謎です。

‘Gaza, part of Arab nation’
It is a fact that stamps which feature maps have been used for political messages. And this one reminds us that it was not long ago when Egypt was claiming this land as theirs. Still now, they have the control over the South end of the Gaza strip around the Rafah area.
好みのものが多いので地図の切手はよく手にしますが、詳細を見るとその国のその時の国策が色濃く反映されていて、知らなかった歴史を学ぶ事になります。この切手も、最近失脚したムバラク大統領があまり前面に出さなかったガザ地区を巡るイスラエルとの確執が、1950年代には国内外に知らされていたことがうかがえます。

1st National Sports Meet
In recent cycling competitions of Women’s sprint, you always find strong Chinese girls. I realise that they have long history back to 1950′s. This stamp has beautiful composition and colour combination and the girl looks very fast.
最近、女子の自転車競技のスプリントでとても目立つ中国人の女の子たちがいますが、この切手を見ると、彼らの活躍には1950年代からの歴史があるようです。渋めの色あいで構成のかっこいいこの切手。しっかりしたふとももの速そうな女子が描かれています。

There is no sign of spring here in London yet. The car is covered with frost and it takes extra time to get to work in the morning.
I watched a TV program on David Thompson recently, an English man who lived in Canada and dedicated his life to map making of North Canada. He learnt a lot from his wife, a native American, and members of her family – how to survive in severe climate. I like this stamp, as it pictures the atmosphere of cold Canada and this committed man.
ここ数週間ロンドンでは寒い日が続き、出勤前に凍った車のフロントガラスを溶かすのが日課になっています。
少し前にテレビで観た『カナダ地図を作った人』が描かれた切手を見つけました。エスキモーの女性と結婚し、彼女やその家族から極寒のカナダを旅する知恵を学び、地理観測に生涯を費やしたイギリス人。彼の没後100年を記念したこの切手からは寒いカナダの雰囲気と彼の苦労が伝わってきます。

Another handlebar design on stamp, this time it is pictured correct, I think. It is interesting how a part of particular object reveal the whole. According to ”Bicycle Stamp” by Dan Gindling ( 1997, Motorbooks International ), this Peace Race was held to retain relationship between Czechslovakia and Poland after the World War Ⅱ, started from Warsaw, ended in Prague – then why stamp issued in Romania?
同じハンドルバーでもこちらは正しく描かれているようです。ある道具の一部分だけが描かれたら、それが何か分かる、というのは面白いですね。ダン・ギンドリング著『Bicycle Stamp』によると、この「Peace Race」は第二次世界大戦後のチェコスロバキアとポーランドの関係回復のために企画された自転車レースのようです。ワルシャワを出発し、プラハでゴール。あれ、ではなぜルーマニアで切手になっているのでしょう？

Opening of Kanmon Tunnel
One more stamp from 1950′s Japan. This tunnel is crossing the Kanmon Straits between Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi and Kitakyūshū, Fukuoka in western Japan. The digging of this tunnel begun in 1939, stopped construction during the war, then started again in 1952. Japanese government said ‘After War era has finished’ in 1955 and this stamp is also showing the country’s mood. The tunnel is closed at the moment, repair work after 51 years of usage. I wonder if you still have to push your bicycle to cross this tunnel for 2.3 miles?
50年代の日本の切手からもう一枚。関門トンネルの掘削工事は戦前の1939年に始まっていたのだそうです。戦争で中断された工事は1952年に再開され、1958年に完成。1955年には「戦後は終わった」という宣言が出されたそうで、そういう工業発展のムードが出ている切手だと思います。51年を経て、現在修復工事中のようですが、今でも自転車は押して歩くのかな？3.6キロの道のり、押して歩くとけっこう長いよね。

Prince returned from abroad
In contrast to the last stamp issued in the same year, it clearly shows that post office paid effort to make this stamp impressive. OK, it looks good but was it that important to celebrate the young prince had returend from Oxford University? Anyway, worth to magnify and enjoy. My eyes are cought by a little cloud floating near the bottom of the Phoenix. Yes, it was needed to make graphical balance.
同じ年に発行された電燈の切手とくらべると、郵政省がこの切手には手間とお金をかけたようです。皇太子がオックフォードでの遊学を終えたのは、そんなに記念すべき事だったのかな。単色ながら、虫メガネで拡大するとその細かい線描での濃淡を楽しむことができる切手。鳳凰のおしりの辺りに浮かんでいるちっちゃな雲がかわいい。構成上そこに何か欲しかったのですね、きっと。

75 Years of Electrical Lamp
Celebrating innovation and development of electrical light – it seems to me its celebrating peace of being allowed to light up their town and homes, after 8 years from the end of the war. Blur mono colour print shows the country did not afford to take time and monery on stamps.
電燈の発明と発展の75年を祝う切手。戦後8年にして、ようやく各家庭に明るさのもどった象徴であるようにも見えます。線のあまいボケた単色の印刷が、実用品である切手に時間やお金をかける余裕のなかった復興の時代だったことをうかがわせます。

Firstly I guess this is about 100 years of some kind of lamp, but my translator describes ‘Maakauppa’ – the land sale. I am confused. Then I bought the ‘Stanley Gibbons Stamp Catalogue Part 11 Scandinavia’. It helped me to find what it is about. Mono colour, simple and neat design.
最初は「電灯の100年」かな？と思ったのですが、オンライン辞書では最初の一語を「land sale」と訳すのです。何だろう？

スタンリー・ギボンズの切手カタログを買って、何の切手だったかわかりました。希望の灯りが点ったのですね。単色ながらシンプルで端正なデザインです。

The stamp shows the crossing point in the history when man-powered postal delivery was taken over by motorbike and car. It looks for me, bicycle man is rewarded his service of depicted in front.
人力の自転車で配られていた郵便がバイクや車にとって替わられる、その分岐点の四つ辻が描かれているようです。自転車の人を前面に配して「お疲れさん」と労をねぎらっているような、そんな愛が感じられる切手。

林業の100年を記念した切手。単色のシンプルなデザインながら、言わんとすることがはっきり描かれ、美しいです。

動物愛護を謳っているのだと思われますが、、、未確認。抽象化されたフクロウがとってもかわいい。

Stamp Exhibition ‘Westropa’
It is guess promoting stamp exhibition, as on green stamp it shows magnifier and there is a pair of tweezers on red one. Beautiful rhythm of White lines.
白線の強弱が美しいおおらかなグラフィックにまずひかれたのだけど、よく見ると虫メガネとピンセットが描かれています。切手の展示会を記念しているようですね。
