Another set of stamps on Olympic games was issued in 2010 – somehow missing from the list of 2010 in GB stamp archive but this one above looks like it was designed by the artist Michael Craig-Martin. My favourite designs are about the Paralympic games, again.  The stamp below is showing the ringing bell of Goalball – which is a team sport designed for blind athletes.

なぜだかイギリスの切手アーカイブから抜け落ちているこのオリンピック・セットは2010年に発行されました。いいな、と思ったのはまたしてもパラリンピック競技の卓球とゴール・ボールという競技を描いた2枚。ゴール・ボールは第二次世界大戦後の負傷兵のリハビリのために考案された、盲目の人たちの球技でした。

In busy London, Wimbledon has started today.  Then it’s 31 days to Olympic games and 64 days to Paralympic games…  My studio is located on the edge of the ‘Olympics event zone’, and the area is dedicated for authorised staff car parks.  It is easy to imagine that total chaos is coming soon!

Three related sets of stamps were issued for the Olympic games since 2009 – less than half of them I like.  Then I realise that the ones I like are mostly for the Paralympics.  So, I started to look up the details of sports in those games.  In the Equestrian events, people who started this sport for rehabilitation from Cerebral palsy will exhibit their developed skills, for example.

Not just for top elites of pro sports or mere nationalism, it will be very interesting to watch the results for people with a different type of motivation.

今年のロンドンはイベント続き。今日からウィンブルドン、31日後にオリンピックの開催、64日後には同じ会場でパラリンピックが行われます。わたしの仕事場周辺は「オリンピック・イベントゾーン」と名付けられ、先週末から関係車両の路上駐車区域になりました。通勤に時間がかかりそうな、、、。

オリンピック関連の切手は今までに3セット出されていますが、心おどるような素敵なのはまだ出ていないのです。そしてよく見ると、気に入っているのはほとんどパラリンピックの切手でした。そこで始めて、パラリンピックについて何も知らないことに気付いて、競技ルールや参加資格を読んでみました。たとえば、馬術競技は脳性麻痺のリハビリのためにこのスポーツを始めた人や、日常的に車いすを使う人たちが参加します。

スポーツ界のエリートが繰り広げるパフォーマンスや愛国心とは対照的な、もっと個人的なストーリーをパラリンピックでは観ることができそうです。

The Royal Mail have issued two sets of stamps for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in February and May, but from the graphical point of view, both are not very exciting or original.

Instead, I would nominate my best favourite portrait of the Queen – from 50 years ago.  Without a crown or heavy jewellery, this Canadian stamp is depicting the steady and beloved personality of the Queen.

街中にユニオンジャックがはためいたダイヤモンド・ジュビリー、女王の戴冠60年を祝うイベントも終了したようです。ロイヤルメイルからも2月と5月に女王の切手が出ましたが、別に工夫もなくはっとする美しさもなく、ちょっと残念。

エリザベス女王の肖像はたくさん切手になっていますが、カナダで50年前に発行されたこの肖像が、きりりとしていて一番好きです。冠もジュエリーもつけない女王の、実直な人柄が出ている気がします。

national celebrations / 国家的お祝い

We are in the four days National holidays to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – 60 years since the coronation.  Many shops in town have window displays dedicated to this event and the radio is playing pieces of music written for historical monarchs and the Royal family.  It is a bit too much for me, this National feature of the flags and crowns in town!

But I like the Queen and stamps with her portrait or silhouette – hoping not to lose her for many years to come – this is my celebration of the Jubilee.

I especially like the Queen’s sunny smile (1972) on top – and both young (1951) and mature (2001) charming smiles.  As they feature the Queen’s portrait, they have no silhouette as you normally find on British stamps.

女王の戴冠60年を祝う4連休が始まりました。街ではたくさんのパブや店がお祝いの飾り付けをして、ユニオンジャックがひらひら舞い、王冠モチーフがショーウィンドーに飾られています。ラジオでも朝から歴代の君主に捧げられた曲がかかり、、、過剰なお祝いムードに少し食傷気味。

でも女王は好きだし、女王の肖像やシルエットの入った切手がすっかり当たり前になっていて、もう少しこのままがいいな、、と思うので、このポストで個人的にお祝いします。

このシリーズは6年前に、女王の80歳の誕生日を祝って発行されたものです。1972年（46歳）のサングラスでおおらかに笑っている女王が一番のお気に入り。1951年（25歳）と2001年（75歳）の50年を経てもチャーミングな笑顔も素敵です。

Issued in 1980, this stamp shows six different ways of sending messages to a remote place – I am not sure what the left hand side top image indicates, though…  Middle one on the right hand side is a punch card.  My mother (born 1937) was a forefront key puncher from 1955 in the Mazda car factory.  The recording efficiency has been dramatically improved since!

I like this simple composition and modest colours.

1980年に発行されたこの切手には6通りの遠距離通信が描かれていますが、、、左上の図が何を表しているのか見当がつかないのでした。右列の真ん中はパンチカードです。わたしの母は1955年に、当時の最先端の職業としてマツダ工場のキーパンチャーを務めたのでした。記録メディアはその頃からすると、比べ物にならない進歩を遂げているのですね。

控えめな色味とあか抜けない構成なのに、なぜか惹かれる切手です。
